I think Banfield deserves a lot of credit here,Kelly only had 7 touches till half time or when he went off, he then gave Shuey the irrits for the rest of the game .

I remember after the first derby this year when Kelly racked up over 40 disposals, questioning why we didn't tag him. It was suggested that tagging wasn't the way to go, but it seems JL took note and used Banfield who hasn't played that role since his first year at the club.
Not only did he do a great negating job but got plenty of the ball himself.
Always cops plenty of criticism but he's always showed that he's better in the midfield than as a defensive forward

I’m amazed that coaches don’t tag more often. Banfield is worth his place in the team because he has the gift of being able to suppress a key opponent while still managing to have an impact on his own right.

WTB, the key is using a player who does hurt the opposition both ways, the tag and the disposals he gets. Crowley had that, so did De Boer, so does Banfield. Using Serong is counter productive, as shown yesterday it reduces his effectiveness.

I think JL was using Serong as a run with player early this year to show him how hard he needs to work both ways for long periods to be one of the best in the game. He sees something special in him. He will only be better for it but don’t expect to see him do it ever again.

Bozza, I agree, it was part of his footy education, but was using him as an example of the type of player you lose value on when you use them as a tagger. There is a mental skill set to the job as well, if you are looking for an attacking tagger. (The proper description is probably "run-with player").
