TOPIC: Chris Connolly on The Front Bar

Connolly marketed FFC. That was his main skill, he was comfortable in the media. He did the corp dinners and the speeches, he entertained. "We don't need clash strip - our colors already clash with each other"

Midway through, he lost most of the players. I worked with one of the players parents at the time, and she was discreet, but said it was not a happy team, and it wasn't a team issue.

I you had him back, you get him flogging all that dodgy merch and running the Jumper auctions.

I reckon he could have filled an hour of stories about his time here.
I bet there would be a lot more laughs ,and a lot more revelations of the inner workings of the club in his time.

To me he seemed to be wanting to extend some of his yarns but pulled up short.
A lot of laughs in his yarns,.and to be a fly on the wall as he fronted the AFL would have been priceless.

RR, I wonder how many of the playing squad of the time agreed with the move to Cockburn, I reckon you you could tell by the way the steves pushed the wizzbang side of the move that they were the only ones for it. Freo need to get back to Freo if they want to be a real force in the future, it's where our heart is, it's where our support base is, AND, it is FREO.

My favourite time as a Freo member was when Connoly would bring a couple of players back to the Billy Walker room and give a run down of the game and all things Freo. His rapport with the crowd was fantastic.

Yes, great memories of BW room! Unfortunately, it was all conveniently canned when some bloke got too snarky after a season ending loss in 2004 or 2005(?) against the Roos, and I suspect even CC knew he was getting too short of witty repartee with the usual success hungry crowd every second week.

Of the players dragged up on stage at that time, JLo was the last I would have expected to be bothered with buttering up to the pains of the coaching caper.

With the posts of love towards Chris Connolly I can remember at Adventure World family day and Chris was all by himself roaming around and no one giving him the time of day.
Chris Connolly gets up on the stage and says " This is our Year ! " and there was no response, nothing, just the the sounds of crickets.
And then he says "Really ! "
We made the preliminary final that year.

I still have Chris' mobile number in my phone - every year I send him a Merry Christmas text on behalf of all of us.

Potentially embarrassing confession: I really liked Chris' time with us and was disappointed that we yet again ruthlessly sacked a coach, so I sent him a card. Nothing too fan-girly, just thanking him for his efforts, expressing regret over his leaving and wishing him well for the future. I admit I did wonder if he would reply, thought that would be pretty nice, but figured he had other priorities like packing up his life and family and getting out of WA, so definitely no expectations from me.

Many months pass and Christmas rolls around and in the mail comes a card from him, wishing me a Merry Christmas and expressing his hope that Freo go on to bigger and better things.

I'll always remember that. He didn't have to go to the bother. Shows what a top man he is.

Peter Bell was captain for all of Chris Connolly’s tenure. I’ve often wondered how anyone who has met them both could decide that rumours of Connolly ‘losing the playing group’ were exclusively Connolly’s fault.

Do you reckon there’s a person alive who Bell reckons he couldn’t do their job better than?

No doubt Morgan. The whole rotation thing, was Connolly's idea. I recall Bell's histrionics at the time. Like, during the game when taken off.

The two great shifts in football were pioneered by Freo coaches. Neesham, possession based football. Connolly, exploiting the interchange bench.

The bloke who resisted the latter change, ended up running our football department. Bell is a tosser.

Not to mention Bell had that little interest in playing for the club in his later years, he was based well out of Perth and trained on his own, barely appearing at the club. The calls about player unrest were definitely not a one way street and I'd argue the blame was in large part due to certain players.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
