TOPIC: Showdown: free to air

Finally - we get a free to air broadcast of the SA Showdown game. It's been years since we've had one - next to the Derby these games are the next best games of the year. Usually the EGirls game on a Saturday gazump these games getting airtime in WA - every year (at least the past three, but maybe longer) I send in two emails calling for these to be stand alone national broadcast fixtures - the AwFL ignore me.

Can anyone tell me when the last free to air Showdown was on in Perth?

It's got to be longer than that - or I missed that one.

Ah ha, I sort of believed you. You can get the precise number of handballs it took for Todd Ridley to kick a goal, but it's impossible to find out what was on the tv last year.

Years I reckon, well into yonks territory since the last Showdown.

The question was so specific, I had to give an answer.

But it's always very frustrating. They build up all these weird games and call them blockbusters but they bury the Showdown and the Derby (and whatever Sydney call theirs) at weird times and often directly against other games of not interest. They used to do the same when Brisbane and Port Adelaide were at the top of their game. If it doesn't have Carlton in it, Channel 7 don't think anyone will watch.

I'll continue - you're right, of course. I remember when they fixtured in Friday night after Friday night after Friday night with Carltoon playing bloody awful football - every week it was like watching someone have their warts burnt off. It was so bad a large proportion of the footy television audience switched over to league rugby (which is like watching your grandmother getting mugged). You would only hear about these great battles going on in SA or somewhere else on the weekend. Let's face it, even the Queen's Birthday or the Dreamtime games were yawners most of the time - what made it worse was Freo being stuck in a RoLy-ball noose that made going to the football worse than being stuck in the box at divorce court.

Then along came covid and they were forced to put more thinking into the broadcast schedule. Well, hallelujah.

Update: the AwFL have taken the Showdown off free to air and plunked it on Foxtel.

Did an Australian unexpectedly make the final of something or did they uncover the lost episodes of Inspector Morse?

I am convinced those guys down at AWFL Control are playing silly buggers with me. I reckon someone says "Let's just put the Showdown up on our broadcast free to air schedule for a bit, change it to pay tv and then run an office pool on how long it takes that nutter Polly in WA to send in an email."

CH7 found the lost episodes of Australian Home & Garden from 1972, Shane, they have to put them to air in prime time.
