Retirement announced
One of my favourite (ex) Fremantle players. 245 games, 9 seasons with Freo and 5 at Collingwood.
He made the most of his ability including resuscitating his career after a bad year with the Magpies.
Always spoken about as a great person off the field.

One of the league’s best role players, and one of the good guys.

For us he was good for a goal a game, and his forward pressure inside 50 was insane. For context, he averaged around 5 inside 50 tackles a game for us, and our current team combined averages 6. He really seemed to make the most of what he had, and that’s a player you can really get behind.

The high point under Lyon was the third quarter PF against Sydney 2013, exemplified by him and Barlow attacking ball carriers on the northern wing. Never seen the like. Was really putting some sort of season together in 2021 when available, too. Just a great career all round, gave it everything. Give your body a well-deseved rest now Chopper, it's earned it.

Had some really good years and carried the forward line at freo for a time when pav was injured. I have yet to erase that miss in the 2015 preliminary final in the first qtr from 15 out that would have put us 4 in front, but alas.

Reinvented himself as a very able wingman at Collingwood and may of won the norm smith medal if Collingwood had won that grand final.

Well done I am sure the Perth football club would welcome you with open arms. Would make a good assistant at freo as well

I sat on the outer at Moss Street and watched a quarter of football with him in early 2008, later that year I had a long yack with his Grandad in the burger line-up at Basso. You'd be hard pressed to find a better bloke than Mayney - genuine through and through and one of our best team players. If you had to light a smoke he would be the first to offer and hold your beer.

Character, grit and determination. The ultimate team player. That’s Chris Mayne.

Nobody got chewed up and spat out more under the Ross Lyon game plan than Chris Mayne. And still he gave 140% every week, even when he knew that his efforts were all in vain.

Furthered his career elsewhere, and not long after got thrown under the bus by the very same coach who lured him there. Ironically outlasted that coach in the end.

Massive admiration and respect for the guy. Would welcome him back into Freo fold in any capacity any day of the week.
