TOPIC: Clarkson gone

Hypen, I mostly agree.

I’ve said this a lot over the years, but I reckon people overestimate the effect a head coach has on a team. Clarkson’s team won when Clarkson was coaching great players. His team lost when he was coaching bad players. If you replaced Clarkson with a league-average coach in 2013 (say someone like Ken Hinkley), would the Hawks have still won the flag? I reckon they probably would have. Would they have won three in a row? I’d say probably not.

But if you’ve got a coach who has shown he can put a team over the top to win a flag, there would need to be a compelling reason to get rid of them. Having an assistant who has the characteristics of a good coach and is younger probably isn’t a good enough reason.

Anyway, sucked in Hawthorn. You’ve likely Buckleyed your team for the next decade, and Clarkson will probably Pagan the Blues for half a decade.

Edit: I had a a feeling I predicted this. As it turns out I said Clarkson would be coaching elsewhere by 2020, so I was out by a year. .

Well played Clarko!! He was in the driver’s seat with one year left on his contract and Collingwood (and Carlton) as his perfect stalking horses. Hawks either had to extend his contract or hope for an alternative option that minimised their financial hit in 2021.

(...,Mitchell the well known sniper hits his target once more.)

He’ll be coaching the Blues next year. A selling point for Cerra if he is still undecided.

Well one good thing, Roly's boat for another coaching job at Pies or Blues is further away than Shane's ownership now.

Clarkson press conference on Fox. Handled himself really well. A few teams will be knocking down his door for his signature.

You'd think the new coach will be all for his players taking the knee

Yeti, Clarko has similar baggage to Mitchell when it comes to dog acts, I reckon Kennet might be Pavlov.

Yeah, I dunno, RM.

Clarkson has certainly shown a bit of small man syndrome at times but he's coached them to four premierships in a decade. He deserves a more graceful conclusion as head coach than being kicked to kerb to accommodate somebody like Mitchell. If I said what I really think, I'd get a life ban...

If there is a more ungrateful, graceless and unjustifiable way to end his time as head coach, I can't see it. Hawthorn have embarrassed themselves doing this. This is not a message that says success and loyalty are appreciated. It's a message that says no matter what you've done for us, we'll happily stab you in the back if we feel like it.

Yeti, you make some valid points, but whenever I think of Clarkson the coach, I think of those scenes of phones flying, holes punched in walls and foul language, when things didn't go his way. We made a lot of fun of the Scott brothers and their coaches box antics, but they rarely resorted to that.

Recent history would suggest that AFL coaches need to have extreme drive and a bit of an aggressive side to win premierships. Some may hide it better than others but successful recent long term coaches like Malthouse, Matthews, Hardwick, Scott, Clarkson, Longmire all have that edge to them as coaches (as they did as players). I guess the trick is being able to control it when it comes to the surface.
That said, recent appointments like Longmuir, Fagan, Noble and Teague seem more moderate ... it will be interesting to see how they perform over the coming years.

I don't agree with that. I think they hire people like that because it's a boys club, it is tangential to their success.

I take your point Shane. I wouldn’t respond well to aggressive coaching as a player but it seems to have been the accepted model until recent times. As mentioned in my post, recent appointments seem to have moved away from that approach with interpersonal skills, stability and emotional intelligence being more highly valued.

Good riddance. My memory isn’t short enough to forgive Clarkson or Mitchell.

We did everything the hard way to play them in a GF and the gift of ‘Buddy arcs’, ‘unsociable hawks’, ‘good job of getting on top of the Ballantyne stuff’, BS 50m and not to mention Mitchell’s Knee.

I’ll be more than happy if the Hawks, Mitchell, Clarkson and whoever else involved at that time enjoys a sustained period of looking over the shoulder, unsubstantiated innuendo, ‘not quite getting the rub of the green’ or whatever questionable treatment imparted on them.

We’re experiencing it without a flag, be great to see all of them have some Long overdue Karma.
