TOPIC: Last 4 rounds

Good article on the AFL website on what the dockers should aim for in the last 4 games.
Ie possibly playing Liam Henry on a wing and giving western an extended period in the team , as Henry has been afforded.
Injuries to key youngsters will limit this so the pickings are much slimmer.

The Board needs to extend JLo’s contract right away, and then tell him to focus on 2022. They (reportedly) paid Lyon a million bucks not to coach the team in 2020, and unless Freo win two of their last four games (and lose again to the Eagles) then our record will not have improved at all in the two years since Lyon was sacked, despite being two years further into the rebuild.

I can see why a young coach might want to avoid that outcome, and might be tempted to prioritise winning at the end of this year ahead of development, which is why the Board and Peter Bell need to protect him and own that decision.

We've got at least four games left this year - focus on winning four games. Then think about Morgan's points.

RIGHT, the Tiggys in a wet Sunday afternoon - let's get at them, we can win this for sure.

Eventually
We should always be playing to win so playing finals will sort itself out. The focus should be on rewarding all deserving players at Peel and dropping all non-performing current players. Gifting games should not be an option but from what I can see O'Driscoll, Western, Gero, Duman, Valente ( when back) and Meek all merit games immediately and Colyer, Banfield and Crowden have had their chances.

How can you give a game to Valente when he has taken personal leave, isn't training with the squad and been away for at least a month?
I seriously doubt he'll come back at all. I feel really sorry for him and what he's gone through.
Leno Thomas is another who's gone and surely will be delisted. Hasn't been at the club for months now.
And Giro's form at Peel lately certainly shows he's not in contention for a game and must be in serious danger of being delisted.
You say we shouldn't be gifting games but that would be the case here.

I’m not saying the team selected shouldn’t go out to win the games – of course they should – but if Darcy’s knee needs a rest (or worse, surgery), then I’d rather do that now, get a few more games into Meek, and have us jump out of the blocks next season than wait until the end of the year and have Darcy miss the early stages of pre-season.

Mundy looks a little spent. Of course you’d pick him if you were trying to play finals at all costs, but maybe we could let the old guy have a weekend or two off before the end of the season, especially if it means we can see Tucker get a run in the middle again for bursts; his contract ends this season, and we’ll either need to sign or trade him, so it might be good to let him demonstrate his worth before the season is out, because playing at half-back hasn’t done him any favours.

Maybe it’s giving Logue a different role as a precursor to next season if we have most of our defenders back, or throwing Henry or Young on the wing for a quarter. Are Watson and Duman going to be around next year? Why not get a look at them before their contracts expire at the end of this year?

I think Schulz has done enough to show he’ll be around next year, and frankly he looks a bit cooked, so why not give Western more time? Nothing Colyer does in the next four rounds will affect his status for next year.

I’d rather a team of young guys out there playing for their careers against Richmond. I actually think it’s our best chance to win, because our team looks a bit tired. And to be honest, I’d rather we rest a few players this week and come out firing in the Derby, because even though we might not improve on our wins and losses for the season, it would be nice to at least beat that lot for a change.

Is there any record of clubs buggering about with selection at the end of the season and then coming good the next year? I say whip these bastards until they hit the finish line.

I disagree with the premise of the article that trying to win is the opposite of giving young players a go. However I also disagree with making wholesale changes to the team as Morgan has suggested above. The young mids need a wise head around the, particularly at centre bounces, so I’d leave Mundy in but reduce his playing time.
Hodor should be plonked at FF, let meek do the majority of the ruck work. Tabs can be the link player moving up to high half forward and Treacy can start next to Hodor but come charging out at the ball carrier. Young and Duman can alternate between back and wing giving us a marking target coming out of defensive 50 and Henry and Walker can provide the pace and skills on the other wing. Chuck Tucker in the guts.
The only one I do agree with is Western in for Colyer or Schultz, neither of whom have been very good the last month.

Remember when Melbourne deliberately lost games so they could draft Jack Watts?

Watts single handedly killed tanking.

Do we have to play the last 4 rounds? I'm not sure about the players, but I'm cooked. And the worst thing is that all the other teams around 8th spot keep conspiring to keep us in the hunt. Just finish us off you b#(@rds.

Makes me wonder how many times we'll hear the phrase "mathematically possible" in the next few weeks ....

Though even if we just pull up stumps, I've still got Collingwood, Melbourne and Brisbane to support for three of those four rounds.

RR if you recon you are cooked, have a chat to CA's Dog.

Shane you have already Whipped Fyfe to death, can we maybe give Hodor a rest and Mundy as well?
