There's a gap between making a joke about Armadale and discriminating against someone from Armadale.

A bit like, I imagine, the one between the ears of the Sky News listening mate of yours who tells you your jokes about women's book clubs are funny.

it’s quite simple really. depending on your world view, either:

i. there are people who are inherently bad and people who are inherently good, or

ii. there are people who have made and will make bad life decisions, and there are people who have made and will make good life decisions

The key is that whether you fall into the good or into the bad has nothing to do with which school you went to, whether your parents are still married, your race, your religion or whether you had more opportunities or privileges granted to you than the average.

In reply to Shane

I don't find book clubs funny, they are terrifying. I don't joke about them. I don't know anyone who listens to Sky News.

The point I was trying to make, badly I guess, is that providing your children with a safe, stable, monogamous environment, including a privileged education, is seen by most people as giving them a good start in life. Some children might not use that background as a springboard, but I don't think Simpson is a bigot for saying what he said.

but the whole point Wharfie, is that the “good start” afforded by going to Hale, Wesley, Aquinas etc actually tells you NOTHING about the character of the individual. It just tells you that they’ve been given more opportunities than the kid at Rockingham High School.

I went to a posh private school in Wales before moving to Australia (so posh that they considered sending young Wills the future king there) and everyone who knows me thinks I'm a total bastard.

There's probably a lesson in there somewhere.

Well, he better hope his books a bestseller then, coz I can't see Nizzy & Simmo drafting him on a $750k contract.

Hi Jezzaargh

Do we agree that it is easier to take an opportunity if it is offered than if we have to go out and make our own opportunity?

It is probably true that the people who manage to make their own opportunities end up being stronger characters than the people who get opportunities handed to them.

I just doubt that people who are criticising Simpson for what he said, would choose a single family, more likely to be poor/stressed, state school background RATHER THAN a monogamous, more likely to be financially stable, private school background for THEIR OWN KID.

Part of the reason for this is they think Background 2 has a better chance than Background 1 of having their kid turn into a happy sensible socially responsible human. What do you think?

I think you can spend a lot of time with potential draftees (in formal interviews and more relaxed settings) to get a sense of their values and character, to see if they would be a good cultural fit for your club - assuming they meet all the draft combine metrics. Maybe even administer a psychometric test.

What Simpson said was just plain lazy and you may as well flip a coin to choose the better prospect. And by extension, what you’re saying is equally lazy. There - that’s what I think.

You can’t choose the postcode you’re born into.
