Actually, some of us choose to send our kids to a state school because their values-tolerance, inclusivity, acceptance of diversity, reward for effort-not your father's donation, and ability to mix with a wide range of people. Don't be fooled by the manicured gardens.
And the "advantage" from networks is exactly what has caused our poor level of government.
Wil Powell went to a state school. Couldn't get into the state under 18s. Too full of private school boys . Drafted number 19.

Any public school kid who makes a representative side in this state is likely to have battled hard to earn that position. That bias towards elite private schools has always been present and Simpson is echoing that old boys club mentality of the past. It's based on a hell of a lot of prejudice and should be immediately shot down as ridiculous.

I went to a public school and was the only non-private school kid selected in my district cricket club for most age groups (along with a bunch of Hale kids like Marcus Stoinis). It was so prevalent we ended up moving our midweek training sessions from our club to the Hale nets because it was easier for the Hale kids to make it. There were some good guys amongst the Hale group but rarely did any of them work hard with numerous opportunities handed to them regardless of merit. There were probably half a dozen other kids who would consistently put up better stats during the season and still fail to make the district squads without the connections and opportunities afforded to those who ran in the same circles. The number of times I saw private schooled kids with a far worse output promoted into the district side and then state level ahead of better performed public school kids was ridiculous.

The same situation ran through the Claremont colts when I was involved there and saw many public school kids either not getting an opportunity based on where they came from or walking away from it like I did. I'm sure most are aware it's not just Simpson with this prejudiced view of kids coming through, but the system created to enforce that prejudice. Any public school kids who make it to those representative sides and works their way in front of recruiters has achieved a hell of a lot already. I'd wager their character and work ethic is likely to be far greater than the PSA kid considering the inherent bias of the system against them.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There has been some discussion in cricket circles that Victorian and WA were disadvantaged because of the strength of their private school systems depriving their junior cricketers of the opportunity to play against men in the local district teams. Certainly in NSW the private system doesn't have the sway in cricket, or AFL. But it's not an AFL state. Steve Smith, Waugh bros, Michael Clarke were state school boys.

I've watched PSA schools destroy junior sport - cricket and football. In other states the schools play mid week.

I'd never thought of this subtle but really damaging type of discrimination before. Thanks for all the illuminating posts.

Not in the hockey I played Goodie - everyone played, the tougher the background the better you were at certain aspects of the game. In fact, I would suggest that if you were from a protective and privileged background you wouldn't even last beyond the PeeWees (under 12s) no matter what your skills were like.

But toughness doesn't get you selected in a representative team. Hockey is notorious for this corruption.

They say it's destroying non PSA school pathways in Victoria now. You notice how the idiot commentators always mention the private school players go to, but never the state school. Michael Walters went to Swanview HS, in case you were wondering. They have a Clontarf programme run by a former Freo player, Garth Taylor.
Where did most of the Sudanese players go to school? Probably state run intensive English programmes then mainstream state schools. The private schools will start offering scholarships now they 're becoming noticed.
