TOPIC: Umpiring after 450 games

If you ever wonder why the game sometimes look like carp with 36 blokes in one half and you can't be bothered going or watching....Brett Rosebury (below) on the AFL site about what makes umpiring difficult now after he's umpired 450 games.

"When I started there were about 55-60 tackles a game, now the average is more like 120 and some games get 150 to 200 tackles a game," Rosebury said.

"That has made umpiring much more challenging. Every time there is a tackle the umpire has to make 5-10 snap decisions, so with more tackles there are more quick decisions to make."

Whoever introduced the increased interchanges has given us what we've got. It's time to review the game and make changes to slow it down, which may make for a better spectacle and reduce injuries.

Why complain about tackles when you don't reward any?

They have capped the interchanges, but there are still too many when some players run 15km in a game.

Noddy, the umpy has to make 1 decision. Did he dispose of the footy or not. It is pretty effing simple, i reckon

If they got rid of the “it was jarred out in the tackle” interpretation it would make the umpires life a lot easier and reward the tackling player more often.
There are still other things the ump needs to consider; was there high contact, did the tackle push the ball carrier in the back, was there prior opportunity to release the ball etc. the biggest blight on the game though is players just letting go of the ball as soon as they are caught and not getting pinged for incorrect disposal. Aish got a free paid against him for continuing his tackle after the Geelong player had dropped it last week, that was an awful call by the ump.

Everyone’s got tackling arse-about. Why are we the only game (as far as I know) where the tackle gets more reward than stopping the player with the ball and, often, dispossesing them. Every legitimate tackle should be “play on”. If the player goes down in the tackle with the ball, the umpire should grab it and throw it up immediately.
You’d immediately reduce free kicks by about three-quarters, and reduce conjunction too, because players won’t have time to set up the next pack while free kicks are being sorted out and taken.
Oh, a tiny little thing, you’d be encouraging the player who goes and takes possession of the ball rather than the blokes who wait for him to do so they can tackle him.

Not sure how this will go down at AFL House.

All the focus has been on speeding up the game, making it more open and more goals of course (assuming Fyfe isn't taking the kick) Now Rosebury wants to slow the game down again.

Be nice if they could make up their minds...or interpretations.

I'm not a brain doctor but I feel like the umpiring department could do with looking into selective attention. Instead of trying to take in every bit of information they see and then interpreting whether or not it breaks the rules and then telling everyone to play on when it doesn't, they could just keep an eye out for the things which look like free kicks.

It seems ludicrous that they want to analyse every tackle and make decisions that way.

And the deeper they analyse, I wonder if it then gets harder to maintain a level of "consistency".

I'm just glad it is them and not me. Even if I understood the rules perfectly and could run 10km in a game, no way could I do what they do. Sure I yell at them when they make stupid mistakes. I mean, how could anybody fail to see the blatant shove in Rory Lobb's back last game? But I'm grateful there are people willing to be umpires.

Why did the AFL need to ‘speed up’ a game which for 100 years was loved by many and competes with rugby codes and European football, which are hardly ice hockey speed.

If you want to see a game of tackles watch rugby league or union that’s their bread and butter. We were better than that but not now. A half of footy with zero or 2 goals, hardly heart pumping stuff.

The AFL hasn’t made umpiring a difficult game easier by speeding up the game, and having three umpires has only added to the difficulty by having three interpreters on the ground.

What they’ve done is create a game which has caused many people I know who were diehard fans walk away or turn off the TV because it’s often boring as bat guano and more often than not playing keep it off and going sideways or backwards.
