Is anyone else feeling underwhelmed/frustrated/disappointed by Liam Henry's performances.?

He has played a total of 16 games for us now, including the last 11 in a row this season. Im still wondering when he is going to deliver on the promise we were sold. I can see he offers us pace but his overall performances are blighted by poor decision making, a lack of involvement in general play and for someone who was hyped for his silky skills, his foot skills are lacking. He kicks the occasional goal but then again so does Colyer. I am yet to be convinced Liam Henry was worth pick 9 in the draft. I hope to be proven wrong next season, but this season is passing us by and I am not seeing much evidence of the hype which we as supporters were promised.

Cue the apologists who will say he is only 19yrs, he is lightly framed, he is adjusting to the speed of the game etc. Then again that was the knock on Jeremy Sharp yet he is now doing very nicely for Gold Coast.

I think its time to remove the purple tinted glasses and take an objective view based on what you have seen thus far from Liam Henry by answering the following hypothetical. If we offered him up for trade, what would we receive in return? would anyone apart from Gold Coast offer our top 10 pick back?, based on current performances I think we would be lucky to receive a selection in the top 30. Or conversely if we could time travel back to the 219 draft would you still select him in the top 10 or perhaps gone with Pickett from Melbourne, Bergman from Port or Weightman of the Bulldogs based on their body of work and the fact they all play similar roles to Henry?

Ok now line up to shoot me down.

Did you cut paste that from a Sean Darcy, Andy Brayshaw thread from eighteen months ago?

Silly things to say. Improvement required, yeah, but trade value and time machines? Good Lord!

Both Henry and Treacy need to be developing in the wafl for a couple of seasons. After that we will find out whether they are good enough at this level. But at the moment they both look all at sea.

I don't agree with all the negativity.

Henry is developing nicely. Just because he's not going to win a Brownlow in his first 50 games, doesn't mean he was a dud pick. People on here said the same thing about Tabs, the same thing about Fast Freddy...and probably dozens of other good players. Liam is doing ok for 16 games. Perhaps reframe your expectations a bit more towards reality.

Same with Treacy. I love what he brings. He's got attitude, a bit of mongrel, a great kick and a fabulous work ethic. What he lacks is experience and the chance to develop some footy smarts, so he knows when and how to tackle (with intent).

We've got a decent midfield, an improving defence and a forward area that needs a bit of tidying up. We are doing ok, particularly under the COVID conditions that have not worked in our favour.

For a team that has spent the last half decade barely avoiding being cellar dwellers, our improvement is pretty damn good.

Tonight’s conditions didn’t suit him at all. Geelong play a tough contact brand of footy and he doesn’t like contact at the best of times. He will be ok once he gets some meat on the bones but tough in the wet against guys that just want to smash you at every opportunity. I think that’s where the whole team fell down, Carlton showed them that all you need to do is belt the dockers around the contest and they crumble.

Clinical, when the young Freo players get the same protection from the umps that opposition players do, then maybe it will be a level playing field, until then we will struggle. Case in point, how many times have we seen Freo players cop the treatment Treacy dished out last night without a free kick, let alone a report against the offender?

It’s hard answer hypothetical questions when their premise is completely wrong. We didn’t use pick 10 (or 9) for that matter on Henry, we didn’t have that pick, we matched a bid by Carlton which was overs. So looking at players who went just after Henry is not a valid argument as we would never have been able to pick them anyway.
Should we have not matched the bid and let Henry go to Carlton is the correct question, the answer isn’t as black or white as is Henry worth that pick, the answer is in what do we stand for as a club, if we had made numerous promises that we would take him, and had traded away more later picks to ensure we had two picks before the bid came, then we had backed ourselves into a corner and Carlton knew that when they made the bid on him.
Given the time and development we had already put into Henry it would send completely the wrong message to every other academy player we had coming through if we turned around and said “oh pick 9, that’s a bit steep, sorry mate your off the the blues”.

I agree that there was "too much hyp" about Henry at draft time. He was someone touted as 'having the lot', and so, I think the expectations on him were far too high.

He will be ok...he just needs time and experience at the moment.

Its also hard to define his position. He does not look to be a 'true small forward" (ie a jeff Farmer type), but he does not have the experience or body to play a midfield or half forwd's role 'well' at the moment.
.What he does have is those innate indigenous skills that we all love & appreciate. And he needs freedom to be able to display them. He'll get that freedom as his expwrience builds.

I'd like to see him chucked on a wing, or in the midfield for a few minutes each quater, just to "free him up a bit".

Like Freddie, he needs time.

Seems like you got over excited about how good he was going to be in his first couple of years and , instead of blaming yourself for being wrong, you blame him for not meeting your expectations.

Henry isn't the problem, it's your expectations. He's shown plenty this season and will continue to develop into a fantastic player.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

We’ve made some shocking draft / trade calls across the journey.

Positioning ourselves in the 2019 draft to get Young, Serong, Henry isn’t one of them.

As for Liam he is absolutely learning his craft at AFL

In second half last night with no Lobb, no Tabs all game, Josh playing ruck he was a leading forward and used his slight frame and leap to actually protect the drop zone and bring the ball to ground inside 50. At times with Geelong zoning off he was 1 on 3 or about 70kgs vs 300+kgs.

I also agree with others on here he think he best football for us might be played further up the ground.

In the conditions last night and the pressure brought by Geelong we made some shocking turnovers and ball went straight back in to Geel 50 for goals. In his moments when the ball actually went forward and largely bombed in he didn’t make those skill errors,

I am still positive on him making the grade though I think his form has been poor last few games. His intent or lack of it to tackle, chase etc is poor. Against Collingwood he had intent - great smother on the wing.

I would definitely put him back in the 2’s for a few games and elevate western . He may lack some of Liam’s skill but is far more hungry at the other aspects of the game.

Unfortunately longmuir does appear to lack an inventive streak, could give conca the role. I think he would actually give more pressure in that forward line
