Didn’t hear much said during the game but there were a couple of callers after the game that said he should be moved on and Langdon was happy to talk about it. I don’t believe we would get anything of value from a trade and we should persevere and let him support the next generation coming through. He wasn’t the only one to have a bad night, there were only a small handful that did alright, even Mundy struggled to get into it and he’s had a stellar year.

It was far from Sonny’s best game but the stars show he was also far from our worst player. We expect a lot from him and this year has been disappointing but, if anything, last night he showed some good signs. 17 disposals, a goal and a few near misses. He may have caught the eye a few times for slipping when he needed to stay on his feet but he wasn’t Robinson Crusoe with that.
We had bigger problems than Sonny last night. Banfield barely touched the ball, Henry needs a rest and time to develop, Pearce (who has been excellent since returning) was monstered by Hawkins, Logue was poor, Schultz went missing in conditions that should have suited him, we looked slow with the ball, we were out muscled and couldn’t cover their spread. Lots there to talk about before we get to Sonny!

I know this won’t be a popular opinion. But I’d drop him to Peel his body language is atrocious and he isn’t playing a team game. He should be a role model for the youngsters and his current form and attitude is not right.

There's been some talk about that free kick given to Mikey in the fourth quarter - apparently Stewart's comments were picked up on the umpie's mic.

It happened right down in front of me - Mikey was trying to get to the ball with Stewart on his tail, when he realised that he wasn't going to get to it he simply straightened up and slowed. Stewart pushed him flat over the boundary in the back. Free kick - oops, sprayed off towards Goomalling.

Did Mikey stage for the free? No, it was there - you could see the kid thinking through the situation heading towards the ball and Stewart was dumb enough to fall straight into it. I laughed outragiously...yep, then groaned.

That's why I back Mikey in 100% - those kind of smarts are priceless to a footy side. Shame he missed the gift, but he was smart enough to get one when most of his teammates simply collected a bruise.

RR: I agree that travel and a short break have impacted but I don’t think they were significant factors that can be blamed for an 11 goal thrashing. Geelong were also coming off a five day break and were playing away from home, which provides some rebalance to those aspects of the game.
As JL said in the presser, there are multiple factors that feed into the result.
At the end of they day we were beaten by a more experienced and much better team. There appears to be a reasonable gap between the top six and the rest and last night showed what we need to aspire to over the next couple of years.

I think Walters’ body language is a reflection that he almost can’t believe how badly he is playing, which is fair, because neither can anyone else. The shot at goal Polly mentioned above would have been a monty in any previous year and he missed by a mile. While some physical challenges are to be expected at his age and build, it’s the drop off in his finishing that is just baffling.

I don’t know what the solution is. Every game I expect he’ll bounce back to his old self, and I’m sure Walters and JLo do as well. There’s no way I’d send him back to Peel, but I might entertain the option of sparing him the flight to Queensland next week under the cover of physical management (which might actually be needed), let him have a bit of time at home with his family and to get out of his own head with the footy stuff, and get him back in for the Tigers game in a fortnight.

Morgan, I cant believe that you think Mikey is playing badly, last week he got umpires that believe in playing it as they see it, and he was a pretty effective player. Most other weeks this year, including last night he has been crucified by media and umpire bias. The MRP decision on the elbow to his head proves he is not treated the same as the average player.
