Henry is fascinating.
I remember when Andrew Brayshaw started he would just do the basics. He would get to as many contests as he was able, and if he got the ball he would take the first and simplest option (usually a short handball to a Freo player nearby). He even got in his own head about actually kicking for goal. As time went on, you could see him get a bit more comfortable, and he’ll now take a player on, take a riskier kick, and even have a flyer at goal from 45m on the boundary from time to time. His confidence and ambition has grown as his body and skills have developed to AFL standard.
Henry looks to me like a player whose ambition and confidence are already set at 11, and he’s just not able to pull it off yet.
The temptation for a coach would be to ask Henry to concentrate on the making the simple plays first – walk before you can run etc – but I really hope our coaches resist that urge because we need a bit of x-factor in the forward line. I reckon it will click for Henry soon.
