Walter the baker
Every time I watch Geelong I’m impress by Menegola. I appreciate that he isn’t a Dusty or Dangerfield but he’s certainly an A grader. Given we had a long time to look at him (and I’m not sure if he managed more than a couple of games in the seniors) what was the knock on him before we let him go?

Let's face it - he wasn't getting discussed on Dockerland. So we delisted him, no one cared one way or the other. Subi gave him a run in the WAFL and Geelong after that. Now, whenever he has a half decent game, up he pops on Dockerland - without exception.

I think the whole idea was to constantly discuss the bloke - in a sense, to offer up an alternative to the Andrew McLeod pre-draft narrative, the Trent Croad acquisition, or more recently the cost of bringing Hoges home for a spell. In that sense, mission accomplished.

Thanks Polly. Senility must be setting in because I don’t remember previous discussions about Menegola. I’ll try to remember not to bring it up again.

For what it’s worth, I loved the Trent Croad trade. Watching AA Luke, “Steak knives”, “ McPharLap” was an absolute joy!

Every club will have a story to tell about missed opportunities and poor decisions. Hawthorn moved Kennedy out. Point is there were plenty other great decisions made in that time.

I think in the past four years our decision making has been good, I'd say very good in fact. Carlton, Essendon, St Kilda and North haven't accomplished what we have in the same time.

Last 4 years but only just, the decision to move on players like Barlow, de Pig, Muz, Collins and even Big Griff at the end of 2016-17 were ridiculous and left us floundering for the last 4 years.
As was gifting games to Sheridon & Sutcliffe.

Ross sacked those players and played his favorites . He wanted to show everyone he could build a team himself and buy doing that he could win a flag in 5 years , well done !

From memory, Menegola never got a senior game with us. However, he then went to Hawks and they let him go without a game, too, so maybe there's some comfort in that...?

Rose coloured glasses you lot. He never showed enough when with us to break into a pretty good side.
Menagola was injured for all but 2 games in 2013, played well for Subi in 2014 but couldn't break into a side that only lost 6 games during the HA season.
Similar to Sam Collins, there were deficiencies in his game that led to him being delisted at the end of 2014.
Similar to Sam Collins he worked his butt off fixing whatever was deficient in his game and has made a success of it so far.
This was 6 1/2 years ago, get over it.

He was initially at hawthorn then came to freo.
The knock on him at the time was his disposal.
But was never given an opportunity. Ross liked the same 22 , the idea that you need to keep rebuilding even when doing well I believe still escapes him.

Purple coloured glasses to think Freo would be in a better spot now if we`d kept DePig, Barlow the Gu and Griffendorf longer than we did. Our main problem is lack of elite skills. If our problem was lack of elite effort then I would agree with you but it isnt.
Maybe we could have used Collins for a few months this year but I recall us here on Dockerland moaning we had picked up too many defenders at one stage and Collins whilst good overhead moved like molasses and turned like an MTT bus, although he dominated at Peel.

This isn't moot at all. In the next alternate reality +1 we delisted Taberner and he went on to be a star somewhere else. He was in exactly the same boat with Toss Lyon but luckily came through the other side.
The knock on Menegola was apparently his disposal, but he was always an elite runner. Have no idea why Toss couldn't use that in his gameplan. It was right up his alley, with plenty of worse users
