TOPIC: Treacy who would have thought

It's pretty speculative that Treacy was not taken in the National draft thinking that he'd peaked at 17 years old. But if this is the case, recruitment people are so smart that they are stupid.

Nonetheless, I will continue to be very happy to see smartarses search for particular athletic attributes like beep tests, jumping up to push a bunch of popsticks up high around a pole, and ability to wear mansport-bras while running 3 km time trials while my team recruit natural footballers.

Think Michael Barlow.

There's no way in hell that Treacy doesn't have improvement in him. No way. And more power to Freo because of it.

Absolutely correct, though, that he can't be a solo show. But isn't it exciting when you have options. Let's hope his body holds up.

The whole covid thing is the main reason Treacy went low in the draft. Talls are the ones who can be the toughest to predict as they develop and a year without seeing the Vics grow would have hurt him a lot.

The other reason is it's harder for young talls to get a gig when they're underage as they are generally far undersized with much fewer positions in the 22 available for them to develop and prove themselves. Treacy didn't get as many games in his underage year and they weren't as prominent as a result. I certainly didn't know much about him and I doubt too many had a dossier of his games and performances. Our recruiters did a fantastic job of not just identifying he may have potential but recognising he was someone who'll put in the hard yards and continue to develop.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I might be optimistic but I see Treacy as being more than just a handy third tall. I think you can build a forward line around a player with his attributes. The sky is the limit for this kid in my opinion.

I think you have to build a forward line around him. At least create the space for him to run into.

Although he seems fairly happy to create his own space by smashing through anyone he considers in his way.

Liking what I see.

Morgan, I was talking more about the styleof play comparison than size or type. Hawthorn always had 1 of those 2 popping up somewhere around the fifty in space, and if the footy didn't go to them they created space & opportunity for a teammate. Treacy did that from his first game and that is what caught my eye about him. I was bagged for saying he & Henry would find their feet pretty quickly, but thats all good.

We’re pumping up the expectation pressure on the young guy a bit. Too early to be calling him the second Pav IMO but very glad we have him. Anybody know what sort of a contract he has?

I agree with Morgan he's another Gunstan. And in five years of development watch out you'll have a superstar on your hands.*

*When I say I agree with Morgan, I agree with his obligatory follow up post contradicting his initial post.

With his body shape and strength at 18 I see him more like a young Tom Hawkins. Anyway i like the way he actually leads at the ball carrier and I agree that it opens up space for the other forwards.

Not only does he clock up some kms, these sprint results were from the 2020 Vic Country NAB AFL Draft Combine top performers (not too shabby):

Vic Country NAB AFL Draft Combine top performers
20m sprint
Seamus Mitchell 2.88 seconds
Josh Eyre 2.89
Dominic Bedendo 2.95
Josh Treacy 2.97
Nick Stevens 2.97
Blake Reid 2.97

So we've identified the potential of this guy; I would imagine so have recruiters from Vic based clubs. The checkbooks and go home enticements will be formulated if Treacy continues to impress. A good tall forward is gold for any club.

Does Bendigo have an AFL team? There is no go home factor for country people wanting to play in the AFL or AWFL.

Bendigo is a three hour drive from Melbourne. What difference does any of it make?
