I’m really curious about the outcome of the David Mackay hearing. You can see a few angles of it here.

Was he fairly contesting the ball, endangering the long-term health of his fellow players, or both? I reckon both, and so the AFL is going to have a lot of trouble with this one.

Heard on the radio this arvo that he's been sent straight to the tribunal with a rider from AFL House that they expect 3 weeks plus.

The really interesting part of this is the the MRO called it as an accident and Steve Hocking stepped in and referred it straight to the tribunal. I'm sure the usual suspects on here will pop and state no corruption in the AFL where the independence of office holders is respected but....naaaaah

How is he contesting the ball? Clark's head is over the ball, Mackay bumps and hits him in the head. If you bump, anything that goes wrong is on you. It's not a secret or a new rule.

I would suggest Mackay went in to injure Clark but that has no bearing on it either way.

I’m pretty agnostic about it.

I think if you were making a case for MacKay (as Montagna does in the video), it would be along the lines that he was trying to get his hands on the ball and just missed. It’s not a typical bump.

For what it’s worth, I reckon he was sort of going for the ball but he either didn’t care if he cleaned up the St Kilda bloke in the process, or was deliberately trying to.

It’s pretty obvious that Mackay was playing to win the ball, but the way he chose to do it was by taking his opponent out of the contest and then take the ball. It’s a signature part of the game, has been for a century, is not malicious or intent on damaging the opponent.
It’s also clearly dangerous and has to be sanctioned.
He’ll get three weeks, has to, but won’t suffer Gaff-like opprobrium for the Gaff-like injury he caused.
