I am passionate dockers supporter and also father of an AFL umpire trained by Dean Margetts. The comments about Dean on this post are disgraceful and I have had enough of them. He is 47 years of age and has umpired over 300 AFL games. When not umpiring he is at community games supporting the younger umpires and will often take up the whistle or goal umpire flags if there is a shortage of umpires. His work with the younger umpires and the hours he puts in is fantastic. The comments on this site towards him are short of defamatory. In a game of football the percentage of mistakes umpires make is very minimal. The number of mistakes players make in all teams are far more than umpires and their job is actually easier . Shame on those who use his name in the way it is used. Happy to be booted off the site if my opinion is not respected....Dean is a good man and as an athlete and umpire his achievements are elite.

So you would be happy with all his terrible decisions today. Like constantly giving free kicks in our backline to the opposition when there aren't any. Like giving push in the back when it is clearly holding the ball. Like not giving free kicks when players like Walters get their heads ripped off - play on.

If he has umpired so many games for so long, how can he consistently be bad for this long and stay employed? Coaches and players don't have this luxury.

the umpires including Dean are the most scrutinised participants in the game. The reason he is not dropped is because he performs with low percentage of errors. I have no problem with his performance and knowing he is a person of integrity am always pleased when he umpires our games. Our players made more errors across the day. No umpires no games......we need to model respect at all levels to those who officiate. Freo today won the game in their own right. Well done to them and also Dean. His review wlll be also good. Yes very happy.

Yeah, naaaah.

You can hold any opinion of Margetts all you want but he is a poor umpire. When football clubs single out an individual umpire, as happened with Margetts when the AFL banned him from umpiring egurls games, then something is very, very wrong.

He should never be allowed to umpire any games involving Freo or the slime and I note, most Vic clubs don't want him either.
