This list of clangers is pretty misleading. If you look at the most clangers in the AFL this season, the top 3 are Petracca, Cripps and Oliver rather than Fyfe. All of these players are inside bulls that get the ball under intense pressure. In fact you'll find the top of the list littered with the best players in the comp who do all the hard work for their teams under the most pressure. The top 10 is the who's who of the AFL's best inside mids - Cunnington, Sidebottom, Zorko, Adams, Taranto, Laird... they're the players each team needs winning the footy.
Your guess would be wrong Exceed. Dusty hasn't played much this season and hasn't found the footy when he has (he's spent a large amount of time forward) so this season probably isn't the best. The comparison in 2021 is Fyfe (5.2 clangers per game) to Dusty (3 clangers per game). If you look at last year's rankings where Dusty was playing in the middle more, Dusty had the the most clangers in the comp with 82 at an average of 4.1 while Fyfe had 45 at an average of 3.2. The year before Dusty had the second most clangers with 113 at an average of 4.9 compared to Fyfe's 84 at an average of 4.2.
Player - 2020 Ave Total - 2019 Ave Total - 2018 Ave Total |
Fyfe - 3.2 45 - 4.2 84 - 5.13 77 |
Dusty - 4.1 82 - 4.9 113 - 4.65 107 |
Basically, this stat is rubbish and only reflects the tough role Fyfe plays for the team. Even then, he is far from a bad kick of the footy. His field kicking has always been very good, even on the weekend he nailed some beautiful stab passes that never went above head height directly onto the chest of leading teammates.
Sure he has the yips in front of goal but the rest is just confirmation bias.
