There’s a comparison can be made with Blakely and couple of other players we let go, Chris Mayne and MDB, I agree with Agarn and would rather Blakely in the side over Acres.
Conca, must be discipline issues that he’s not playing ?? Would he have been a good
Match up on SPP or Grey?

I don't know what happened with Conca. He was being heralded early in the season for his shut down roles on some opposition dangerous defenders, then in the blink of an eye he was dropped and we heard he had issues in his game that they wanted him to overcome.

The issue in his game is his kicking. Yes I know what you are thinking.

Everyone's crying out about our poor kicking, especially at goal and then go and name Blakely and Conca as solutions to our problems. It's baffling.

Blakely often handpassed backwards again on the weekend, on several occasions directly to a Port player. There's no point getting the ball if you're just going to turn it over. Never mind of the 3 kicks he had, one went out on the full while the other two were panicked kicks high to a contest (and not to our advantage in the contest) that were then turned over.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Acres is an interesting one. He certainly looks like he isn't trying sometime, but I recall that being a criticism of Mundy for the first several years of his career. Acres is no Mundy, but if you watch closely he can do some very good things in tight (even though he's being played on the wing?) and can break tackles, which is reminiscient of the old bloke. Still, the jury is still out on him.

Acres is fine. He covers a ton of ground and runs strongly back into defence, which makes the other teams’ forward entries more difficult. Coaches value that even if fans don’t see it. His running and stats are on par with Brad Hill, and we’re probably paying him only half as much. I think he’s a really good complimentary player, in the mould of someone like Mzungu, but less cool.

That said, we need someone on the other wing who can hurt a team running forward. It’s a real weakness for us at the moment.

I did notice that Acres broke tackles on the weekend, in a way that I only expect Fyfe & Mundy to do normally. Nice. Just needs to do a bit more, but of what exactly I'm not sure.

I guess it's easy to look at a player and see mistakes.
I saw Acres, two weeks ago, under no pressure, have a forward on a perfect lead, miss him by five metres and hit the backman trailing behind on the chest.
I've seen Switkowski run into an open goal under no pressure and miss from ten metres out.
I've seen Crowden consistently get single digit disposals in a game.
I've seen Watson regularly miss targets coming out of the backline.

And comparing Acres to Hill is setting a very low bar. Hill has had a shocking year with calls for him to be dropped. And then to admit he needs to do more but don't know what doesn't make sense. Isn't Aish usually on the other wing? If so I think he's been pretty good this year.

I was told here just 3-4 weeks ago when suggesting that we need a tagger, that it wasn't the way to go, but a shutdown player in the backline was and Conca was doing that role very well. So three weeks later he's turned into crap? I can't see any difference between when we drafted him and now. So if he we knew his disposal was that bad why did we pick him up? Or you're telling me his disposal just went bad three weeks ago? Undermanned, undersized and under experienced in the backline last week and he still couldn't get a game. Why would we be keeping him on our list?

I thought Conca's problem was that Charlie Cameron gave him a bath.

I hope not Roger. If we start dropping players after one bad game we will struggle to field a team most weeks.

Blakely needs a chat with Dave Mundy about the finer points of the game and how best to use the ball, Mundy is the best in the game.

Blakely has a few really good attributes, being really clean hands, good strength in the ground-ball contest, and a good feel for tight confines to get some space to dispose of the ball. The problem is he’s not fast, and a bit scattershot with how he delivers it. He’s like Paul Haselby but with worse skills.

In order for him to be successful, you need to give him a very specific role. Lyon made sure the backline was full of players, and so having Blakely there winning the ball in a crowd had value.

JLo has fewer players back, so under him defending and kicking has much more value than contested ball winning back there. There could still be a role for Blakely some team’s midfield, but Fyfe, Mundy and Serong can take care of winning the ball for us. What we need is a bit more class on the outside (I think Young will play midfield before too long, especially if Cerra leaves).

I could see Blakely having some value for a team that skews towards outside seagulls. Sadly, it doesn’t sound like those teams agree, and so I reckon we’ll be paying out the last year of Blakely’s contract.

Conca has always had huge question marks over his disposal and decision making, it was the major query on him when we picked him up as a free agent. We picked him up after 2018 when we had shafted all the valuable mature talent on the list and had to go digging for someone to help all the 18yo's we'd grabbed. His role was as a mentor and leader and while I'd have preferred that player was Deboer, he's what we ended up with.

His role as a shut down small defender can be done by pretty much anyone. Conca isn't particular fast or better equipped to deal with an opposition forward so I don't see why he should get the role over better skilled players. The benefit he has is a mature body and head on his shoulders but I'm happy to let a younger bloke with better skills learn the role.

People misguidedly raving about Conca shutting small defenders down earlier in the season isn't a true reflection of his impact on games. I was certainly cringing every time he had the ball and causing turnovers which regularly resulted in goals and he had plenty kicked on him directly including Cameron having a day out. That kicking deficiency was made worse with our best disposers out of the side in Young and Ryan. The heat went onto Hughes but Conca was just as liable for clangers and often from better positions. Conca will probably get more games as the season progresses but he's 29 in a month and on the decline. I'd pick Walker in the side ahead of Conca just to give him some experience once he's fit enough.

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's probably a sad indictment on our list and drafting that we are discussing the attributes of players we all know are average and trying to decide which one is slightly better than the others. Each has some positive and negative attributes which seem to sway some to think one way and others in a different direction.
