What we were taught. As kids. Pick your target behind the goals. Hold the footy over your kicking foot. Start your run in off your kicking foot. Look at your target, then WATCH THE BALL ONTO YOUR BOOT. Follow through with your kick.

The emphasis was emphasized by our coaches most strongly. Have Fyfe, Lobb & co gone back to those basics, right back, stripped down their kicking action and rebuilt it? I would not be surprised if they don't have the time, but 1 hour a day at training for these fellas would not take anything away from the rest of their game. The banana, dribble, screw kick and all the rest of the flashy stuff is part of the warm up, warm down and muck around routines and should stay there until you have no other option on game day.

Nah that's rubbish. Cherry picking one game where he missed a shot and using that as an example is selection bias at it's finest. He wasn't alone in that game with us kicking 1 goal to half time to go with our half a dozen behinds. Some of the culprits were noted 'good' kickers like Mundy, Hill, Ballantyne (two behinds) and Pav (two behinds) who all struggled to get a hold of the conditions and swirling breeze. Fyfe kicked 18 goals and 13 behinds that season including several goal of the year contenders so arguing he was a horrible shot at goal doesn't really stand up with his technique good until this season.

Here's my version of selection bias, an example of Fyfe showing a bit of confidence kicking around the body for another goal of the year contender.

He's clearly gotten in his own head this season with his goal kicking and needs to find a way to regain confidence. His technique is good and doesn't change much from slotting them in practice/training to a game. The difference being the outcome which is more about connection with the boot. Let him bend a few goals in to rediscover his confidence..
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz, where your argument breaks down, is at the cherry-picking of 1 contested on the run snap at goal, while we are talking about his set shots at goal.

The whole point of throwing in a cherry picked clip was proving it's not relevant or representative of the issue.

Also, I just like watching Fyfe slot goals few others are capable of.

I agree he has problems in his routine, but it has been creeping in over the last few years, with his set shots. Is it a result of captaincy pressure getting to his set shot routine?

As for your cherry picking, you could have picked a few more and given us some value entertainment.

Set shots are a different thing to kicking in play. He has no confidence in kicking straight when he's taking a set shot. He will not get that back by doing trick shots. Particularly when they miss. It's not just Fyfe doing that either. It's Lobb, it's Taberner and a few others from time to time. It's ridiculous.

Treating goal kicking like it's a mysterious force that will come back to him if he's just patient enough is silliness. It's something that is able to be fixed.

He has no routine. He has no one come up to him to settle him before he takes the kick. You can see the terror in his eyes when he's lining up.

He needs support from people who know what they're doing. Not positive affirmations that everything will work out, or Don Bradman mythology.

Biz, it isn’t cherry picking if the clip is simply meant as an example of multiple situations of the same kind. We don’t need to attach 20 clips of the same problem to prove the point.

It was cherry picking because everyone misses goals. There were plenty of well noted 'great' kicks at goal who also missed shots on the day and Fyfe had slotted more goals than behinds throughout that season along with every other season until this one. His technique was no different then when he was amongst the better midfield shots at goal in the comp (I threw up a post a few weeks ago comparing Fyfe to other goal kicking midfielders which showed Fyfe had a higher goal kicking accuracy than the vast majority of midfielders before this season).

Cherry picking one moment in 1 game doesn't prove anything. Fyfe's had a tough year and picked up the yips in front of goal and a shot in 2013 doesn't bare too much relativity to his current problem.

I'm not sure if Fyfe is picking a target behind the goals during his routine, but if he is, he needs to stop choosing the bloke who's making his way off to the bar for a beer each time.

Well if I thought Fyfe was any chance to kick it I wouldn’t need to walk off in pre-disgust to get a beer each time he’s lining up.

I see what you are getting at now Biz! I’ve probably confused things by conflating his kicking action with the clip from 2013. I was trying to demonstrate his less than text book set shot action with occasions where it has bitten us. The kicking technique was awful back then and it hasn’t improved a lot since then

Give him a routine. I'd say routinely have Mundy run pass take the Fyfe handpass and stick it through the middle. Sandi will tell you it works a treat!
