Bell said the decision was influenced by a range of factors, including players the club had, from a list needs perspective, identified as potential draftees not being available at Fremantle’s selection.
“We also gave strong consideration to the resources required to transition a new player into our program which, given the reduction to the soft cap, are increasingly finite,” Bell said.
“It is generally our practice to make a minimum two-season commitment to young players that we draft, and for 2021 our preferred conduit is via the National Draft.
“Our preference is, as often as possible, to expose our current list to AFL playing opportunities throughout the remainder of 2021season.”

They get so many things wrong. But I am not sure there is anyone in the MSD that is going to make a difference. We need a tall defender, can’t really see anyone , otherwise we are ok . However we do need to clear out some very ordinary players on our list at year end.

'Generally' making a two years commitment to a draftee is very broad and not hard to meet. (Jarvis Pina anyone?) Guaranteed anyone nominating for the Mid Season draft is 'generally' looking for ANY chance at AFL level, even 6 months.

Generally it's the AFL rule. You have to give them 2 years in the National Draft, it's not a choice. The only time you don't are with pre-season and mid-season drafts.

What he wanted to say was "there's no one we want to draft" but the communications department got involved and they get paid by the word.

I like the move. There's no one available that demands a spot on the list with the high selections all going to project talls who missed out at the draft last year and have shown a little bit in a few games this year. None of them will make it to our pick or get a gig for us in 2021 so why bother with it? Save our time and effort for our current list and the actual draft
