Is this even news? They should have filed this story over 2 decades ago. Regardless of who the figurehead was, this is how they've been run.

The heart of the problem is the greed of the footballers. They want more and more money as players and then they want to keep earning the same sort of money as ex-players than is sustainable for what they do and the market they operate in. So you have to bring in people who can extract as much money out of a football club as possible.

As Shane has pointed out before, the players at the top end need to take less so that the players at the bottom can take more. I am not entirely sure what the lowest paid player at Fremantle is on but I am guessing it is in the range of 80-120 grand a year. For a full time footballer, in the wealthiest sporting competition in the country. And giving up the opportunities to be learning a trade, or getting a degree in under 3 years. You could drive a truck on a mine site and earn more. I understand they are living their childhood dream but there is an opportunity cost to that, and they may well only play a few games in that time. I mean Ethan Hughes is one of the first picked every week and is still on the rookie list after three years. How does that even happen.

Anyway, traditional media is collapsing and I would be interested to know what afl viewing numbers look like compared to, say, 10 years ago. Covid has wiped out sports viewer ship in the US. Players have got used to the idea that everything only goes up because TV deals always go up. That could be about to stop.

Who ever wanted to grow up driving trucks on 12 hr 2 week shifts in Hedland?

Players money is constantly going up with the demands the AFL make for TV rights. The AFLPA wants more of the pie.

Plenty of players plan for their future whilst Playing. Pavlich did a degree in Biomedical science, so he could get a job wearing impossibly tight jackets on the telly.

It’s great there is a salary cap, and even better there is now a footy department spending cap, but I think the AFL needs to look at the limits within the salary cap. Personally, I’d raise the minimum salary, and put in a maximum salary (based on the number of years that player has played and percentage of the total salary cap). The superstars wouldn’t like it, but if LeBron James can accept earning less than market value salary for the benefit of his colleagues, so can Nat Fyfe (accepting of course there is a difference in scale and sponsorship opportunities). If you set the maximum salary at around 10% of the cap, that’s still $1.3 million a year. It also reduces the incentive for young superstars (or stars in the making) to swap teams, and encourages teams to develop from within.

I’d also be open to the idea of clubs being about to pay one or two marquee players a percentage of their salary outside of the cap if it gave clubs an advantage in re-signing players.

On the appointments, I don’t have any issue with corporate accountants being CEO. They need to understand footy, but it’s really up to the Board and President to have oversight of the direction of the club, including from the fans perspective.

Where Freo went wrong (or at least one of the ways) was that we had concurrently a CEO and President who seemed callously indifferent to the fans. That’s unforgivable. I don’t know if Garlick or Alcock are any good, but at least they seem to understand what it means to be a fan.

If the cost of 90% of what we buy was not affected by the salaries and sponsorship of Sports teams and players, I would say "Pay them what they want", but we are paying for them, not Toyota, Not Adidas, Not Nike etc. So the pay needs to be sustainable. It is not.

The question for me is if you run football as a business and make maximising revenue your goal, do you create something as good as if you run football as a sporting competition?

The AFL runs a business and the fixtures and travel are inherently unfair, because they are about maximising money, not optimising the sporting contest.

My opinion is that it is not a case of either/or, but rather if you set out solely with the goal of running the best sporting competition that you can, you'll also end up making the most money.

But sport is a business, look at what happened in Manchester and the riot over club ownership of United. You support a team but really they are just a corporation leeching off our sense of tribalism.

In the US teams have moved from city to city overnight in search of a better market. Its been no different here just the scale is different.

But that's how it is - you've got companies that own vineyards and they fly in Tongans to pick the fruit - then the pubs and caravan parks can charge them $200 a night to fleece their salaries and the local servo can charge them $20 for a Chiko roll. The same thing for footy - the vineyard owners share out their golden geese with Head Office, Transperth all the way down to beer, burger, pie and chip merchants to the point where that poor fruit picker, that pays his rent largely through match-day payment, has to play out a game with a twice dislocated shoulder.

But, Quasi, at least the EPL try their damndest to run a fair competition. If the AFL ran footy like the EPL runs soccer, Margetts would never be able to umpire West Coast.

Maybe I shouldn't put them on a pedestal though. To me the easy movement of players from team to team kills the old-fashioned tribalism on which sport is built. The move towards a mid-season trading period may make sense from the point of view of players and club administrations, but they don't make sense to me, and I pay their wages.

I'm reminded of Dave Warner (no, not the cricketer) talking about Brian Needle. He thought Brian Needle was a spud, but he was their spud, and they just had to put up with him, week after week.

But these days the interests of the players and administrators come first, and as long as we continue to fork out the money they'll keep chipping away at all the things that made footy great.

that article by Jake Niall is inane drivel

football clubs are now large organisations and need to be run as large organisations, not run like a small family owned corner store

that doesn’t mean ruthlessly ignoring the needs/demands of members, supporters, spectators.
