Raggers, I didn't get it either. At the game, I thought the umpire had called Sturt for moving off the mark, which was interesting since Mr Hawthorn person had run out of the goalsquare - which I thought constitutes automatic play-on. But there were all sorts of mini wrestles going on all down the field at the start of that play so it could well have been the return of Pedro the Purple Pinchy Phantom wreaking his regular brand of invisible havoc on the opposition.

Just on the whole umpiring bit. Does it have to be a binary choice between not placing a finger on the back or allowing a shove that would push someone off a cliff?

The current rule is that a player may place their hands on the back of their opponent to protect their position in a marking contest, provided they do not push their opponent in the back. You can’t ‘protect your position’ without applying some force, so umpires must decide whether the force was a push or a, umm, protect. You then get players out of position throwing themselves forward like they were shot out of a cannon.

It’s almost impossible to get those calls right all the time. The problem with such subjective rules is that (most) umpires don’t want to be blowing their whistle all game, so they lean towards letting them go, which means players are incentivised to push players in the back more and more, which means the umps eventually need to be instructed to pay more of them, which leads to an overreaction by the unmpires and then complaints about the interpretation change.

It’s like the tides.

The AFL tried to make it simple with the hands in the back rule, and people hated that too.

You can make peace with the fact it’s one of the most difficult sports in the world and hope that the swings and roundabouts means it averages out over time, or you can keep a mental scorecard of all the times your team has been aggrieved. Raglan Matt has the aggrieved angle covered for all of us, so I’m comfortable leaving that to him.

Chopping of the arms was the one that bugged me on Sunday. I have no idea what criteria the umps are using for that one, but it must involve mass because Darcy never gets that call.

I sent an email to Nicole Livingstone - that Lambert fake deserves a life ban, it's been bugging me all day. As a former swimmer she knows what diving is - I threatened to turn it into a gif, it will set the women's competition back decades.

The thing that really irks me about these dives is that they look practiced. If so, coaches have a responsibility to play a part in stopping these acts. In the words of the AFL, they are bringing the game into disrepute. I detest how often I see similar acts in soccer and I don’t want to see it in footy. The AFLW example shouldn’t just result in s giggle from the commentators.
If the AFL want the comp (both men’s and women’s) to be taken seriously externally then they need to take it seriously internally. Diving is nothing short of attempting to cheat.

Players have always dived and played for free kicks. Every team, every era, every league. It's not a runaway problem of the modern era that needs to be cracked down on. Just boo them. It won't change anything but it's fun.

The staging rule is for when a player tries to get another player reported by faking an injury. Not because a free kick was a bit iffy.

AFLW has been relatively free of this gamesmanship, which is why it has been so watchable. Unfortunately, in 2021, as the fitness and skills of these amateur players has reached a new high, it is accompanied by a palpable upsurge in the worst of AFL: diving, staging and some thuggery as coaches and players become street-wise to what they can get away with.
There is a short window now to clean up at least one of the AFL's products before it descends into a 60 minute foul-fest, from which umpires are forced to cherry-pick frees according to whatever fixation the commentators highlight this week. AFL still need to build girls juniors and keep Mums and girls onside. On past form though, I expect some sleeping at the wheel.

Fox commentary actually did suggest the MRP might look at Mitchell for this.
