That blonde umpire needs to go back to Bros and continue his singing career.....

Great games by Freddy & Hodor. They've had their knockers over the past little while....great to see them starting to grow into 'big roles'. Always thought Hodor could do a job forward, and he proved it today.

Hes not far of his 50th game, and, well...., we dont have to wait till hes played 50...we've got a good 'un there....

He will be a star, and so will Freddy...

At one point around quarter time while the Hawks were going the bash on Freo, (instituted I will assume, by Clarkson correctly interpreting that the MRP & umpires are happy to see Freo players whacked & bashed), the free kicks were 11-1 in Freo's favour. At the conclusion of the game the tally was 19-16, showing a 5-18 tally for the next 3 quarters.

The commentary team were very quick to praise Mitchell for drawing a "soft" 50 with his acting, but whenever Walters went near the footy, wanted him sent off for staging. The shirtfront dished out 50 meters off the ball was completely unnecessary, and outside the rules, but the umpire just said get up Walters.

The interpretation used by the umpire to take the mark off Darcy, and give a free to the Hawks at our half back in the last quarter, if used last week against Carlton, would have seen McKay held to about 2 goals.

I do think that Freo's young players showed plenty of guts to continue putting there body over the footy, Darcy took some very good & courageous marks, Chapman & Watson showed poise down back, Tabs clunked a few and Serong showed why he is already among the best mids playing the game this year.

RM I really rate Walters, he is gutsy and he is the most skilful player on our team but he doesn't do himself any favours by continually staging for free kicks. I get frustrated watching the games live at Optus and seeing him doing it more and more often, especially over the last few seasons, when he clearly doesn't need to.
He played for 2 frees in the first quarter yesterday which weren't paid, so when he was genuinely offended against, I can understand the umps hesitation in refusing to pay him a free. Call it a bit of a conscious bias issue on behalf of the umps but if Walters took this aspect out of his game Im sure he would receive the genuine free kicks he deserves.

Hawthorn took his head off in the grand final and people said he was staging. He has been branded a stager and will not be given free kicks that other players would be given. His head is not sacrosanct.

When they don't pay free kicks that are there, it's natural to play up the contact to let the umpire know what happened. When the umpire doesn't pay the kick because he thinks you're staging, then you look like you were staging. It's a cycle.

As long as there is a Selwood in the league getting free kicks paid while Michael Walters doesn't get any help from the umpires, I will struggle to see it as anything but some form of instinctive bias in the umpires against people like Michael Waters.

Everyone who claims Walters is a stager seems to preface their comments with "I really rate Walters as a footballer" as if this excuses them from being accused of putting the boots in. Compare the hit on him, to the farcical call in favour of Mitchell, and even the decision before that led to the first 50 meters. Then, remember back to the way Cripps hit Brayshaw from behind in the previous weeks game against Carlton.

I’m going over for the game but I’m confused by the ticketing. Does anyone have tickets yet? Freo membership just told me that tickets go on sale on Monday. I can’t access them and rang the club to be told can’t buy tickets until Wednesday which seems odd. Any ideas?

RM I prefaced the comment because I wanted to place some objectivity to the point as opposed to seeing things through purple coloured glasses.

Im not saying that the umps decisions were correct, their inconsistent application of the rules baffles me on a week by week basis, but it isn't only Fremantle who are victims of this inconsistency. Being a footy fan I regularly watch many of the other games and from the comfort of my armchair I can see that other teams are equally shafted at times by the umps.

Maybe it is because many on here are so passionate about Freo we often view things less objectively than if we were a fan of an opposing team. In the first 5 minutes of yesterdays game a Hawthorn forward was clearly pushed in the back by a Freo player in a marking contest in their forward 50. No whistle was blown, play on was the call. Those sort of calls don't really get discussed on here if involves the opposition because it doesn't fit the narrative.

But I digress, the primary point is that Walters makes things far more difficult for himself through his actions, than if he didn't play for frees. Is it a cycle as raised by Shane, I don't know, but I would be happier if he stopped playing for frees and see if this benefits him and the team in the long run.

I don't think Shane called him a stager.

You raise the push in the back to a Hawks player, Taberner got about 5 or 6 of those in the game, the defenders between them another 5 or 6, none paid. I agree, other teams do get some baffling decisions and non-decisions at times but not week in week out as Freo do.

Darcy was absolutely confused at the different for & against interpretations he received for arm chop. A Freo player Aish I think taken out in front on contact in a marking contest, nothing to see, see my gripe about blocking in the marking contest, the diving at the legs rule, all seem to go against Freo on a week by week basis. Not "at times".

And before you bring up the free kick count in the first quarter, most of those frees were for dirty play by Hawthorn, reminiscent of a game Freo played against Geelong back in the Harvey days, when Thompson instructed the Cats to belt the Freo young players. That may have been the game when Ling was whacked by Solly, supposed to miss 6 to 8 weeks, but made a miraculous recovery to play the next week, once Solly had been suspended for 6 weeks.

I remember that Geelong game RM, but it wasn't the one where Solly whacked Ling. Geelong players were frothing at the mouth with outrage as the umps just kept on paying free kicks against them. Umps were good and stuck to their guns.
