Meek is Hannath 2.0? What citrus infused pale ale are you drinking, Morgan? Have a look at the centre square contests and see how often Meek forced the ball to our midfielders or knocked opposition midfielders off balance with his second efforts so our guys could find space. They probably didn't count as clearances but they're priceless and a big reason we smashed it in the middle.

Darcy did offer a contest in the forward line and had two great taps. Congratulations and I hope it continues. He also dropped about 6 sitters, just like he does every week, because he's too slow and unable to jump to get clear of a defender.

I know everyone wants the flabby doofus with no muscle tone to succeed on pure talent. Heck, I loved Hasleby too. But sometimes the adonis is also the better footballer.

Biz, I never said Meek thrashed Gawn in the ruck, but what he did do was compete and greatly reduce Melbourne's rucks influence on the game.

I agree Gawn didn't have much of an influence on the game but I thought that was more due to the impact of the new rules opposed to anything Meek did. The play in that game seemed to avoid kicks down the line to the big ruckman with most of the ball movement fast precision kicks to runners on their own. It was difficult for Gawn or Meek to get involved in the play so it was mostly centre bunces where either had the footy.

I didn't think Meek was bad, he competed strongly and helped our midfield get to work. I don't think what we've seen from him so far is particularly good though, it probably depends where your expectations lie. He hasn't been destroyed in the ruck or looked out of place but that's a low bar that a lot of people seem to be using. For someone of his age and size, I expect him to be winning the battle and having a big influence. That's something Darcy who's younger has done a lot at a much younger age and with injuries hampering him.

Bugger norfs. I wanna keep him. He looks pretty damn good so far.

Two games in and he looks better below his knees than whatalottahooie. He's a very good clearance player so far. Comparing him with Darcy is pointless as they are different types of players.

There's room for both in the side.

In coming weeks I expect to see Darcy play more minutes in the ruck and Meek more inside 50, if he can kick a goal a game and draw a defender away from Tabs, Lobb will have a real battle on his hands to get back into the side. Meek is a better ruck than Lobb and may become a better centre bounce ruck than Darcy, I think Darcy has him in the around the ground ruck battle though.

It will be interesting to see how Lobb goes when he comes back. We need him to kick goals and he's never really done that particularly well. Plus we also need him as a back up ruckman using his height and marking strength around the ground, which he does to some extent but never dominates. Considering I would be thinking he would be on pretty big money he really needs to put his experience to being a more consistent and valuable player for us.
All of a sudden we've got big men options, which is healthy. Meek is doing well for a young big man. They always take time to mature.

Sure they did - a lamp post named Tom something. They interviewed him after the game and congratulated him on coming over from basketball. I can only assume he made the transition to footy when they mounted the lights on roofing panels in basketball. Still, three hit outs across four quarters of footy was an achievement of some sort - no doubt his parents Sign Post and Telephone Pole were thrilled at his effort.

Hypen, I kept a bit closer eye on Meek today (albeit on TV) and you’re right that he’s not the worst when the ball hits the ground.

Unfortunately, watching him closely highlighted for me how bad his ruck work was. He got towelled up by Pittonet, who is not exactly a household name. On boundary throw ins in particular he was constantly out of position and often barely gave a contest.

Obviously the team hasn’t been great, but three marks in three games just isn’t good enough for a team crying out for targets.

There’s scope for improvement but in any decent team I’m not sure you can play Meek and Darcy together very often, and Darcy is just a much better player at this stage.
