TOPIC: Fyfey's hit

I think you're a bit harsh there Morgan, Fyfe has always been the hunted since he became the star that he is and prior to that he was too skinny to go around whacking guys. As for Reid he is a sniper, nothing more and nothing less A hack who saw his chance to try to stop the trend of the game. Did he mean to knock Nat out? I don't think so but as a consequence of his actions, Nat was seeing stars and 6 or 7 weeks would have been generous punishment for an act which the AFL s telling us is a thing of the past.

I'm not a doctor or a physicist but helmets don't work.

The soft helmets are next to useless. The hard helmets can diffuse some of the impact, and the foam can compress and take a bit more - in a direct collision - but they are mostly to protect your skull.

The problem is that in a sport like football the concussion isn't often from the direct collision, it's the force of the head rotating around. Say you get hit in the side of the head like Fyfe, you snap you neck around and the momentum smashes your brain against your skull.

You're spot on there Shane. I think they've done studies on this aspect and the major selling point(?) is that wearing these helmets, as in cricket, gives the wearer a false sense of security. I don't think the helmet worn by Angus Brayshaw would have helped if he were to be dealt a whack like Nat got on Sunday.

I don't think helmets really help at all. They don't in grid-iron nor ice hockey. Everyone has to make a call on when to step away from whatever sport they're in - Fyfe fortunately has a head coach (oops, not noggin coach but boss coach) in JLo who did precisely that.

My nephew got concussed a couple of times playing ice hockey - on his last occasion he was out for two weeks, after 10 days he sat down at the breakfast table, stared at my brother and then abruptly face planted into his bowl of cornflakes. He hung up his skates and consigned his stick into being a garden stake.

I was concussed a few times, the last time was in the late '90s. I was up and about the next day and just kept going - it wasn't until I got older that things....hang on...nup, can't remember what I was going to....nah, forget it.

Nat will be fine I'm sure.

Yeah, I don't remember Fyfe going out and blindsiding players or laying them out when they weren't looking.

I really don't see why that would be raised in the context of Fyfe copping a belt to the head from a guy who left the ground as he hit him. Try as you might, you can't excuse or mitigate Reid's actions.

Having watched the video provided by Quasi, it appears Reid had no other intention than of hitting Fyfe and Reid’s feet left the ground. Switkowski just got in the way.

Shane, that’s out of line.

Gumnut made an observation that Fyfe was disdainful of people who hit him. If that's true, it’s fair to point out he’s hit a few blokes himself in his time. Check out Fyfe’s hit on Greenwood if you don’t consider ‘bracing for impact’ is a thing.

Bringing black lives matter and the me too movement into the conversation in order to score a cheap point on a footy site trivialises those issues.

The Greenwood matter was 3 years ago, and the two are completely different circumstances. For example, Greenwood actually had the ball and Fyfe was the only player going at speed to the ball player. Greenwood played on in that game and Fyfe got one week, which given he made contact with the head of Greenwood was reasonable. Although Fyfe only had two choices, hip and shoulder or stick his arm out to protect himself.

If Fyfe had properly braced for contact he could have cleaned up Greenwood, like Dangerfield did to another player a few weeks ago.

All these concussed hockey players, they really need to explain why they still let the Montessori Mongooses play the 3-5 Twenderdon formation, despite it being outlawed after the incident during the '93 Pashmore Basin final.

Whilst it is accepted knowledge that helmets do not prevent concussion (they are effective in reducing head injuries and fatalities resulting from motorcycle and bicycle crashes ie impact injuries), it is still an area of debate as to whether or not a helmeted player is more likely to be concussed (helmet to helmet collisions, risk taking behaviour) in the context of football and similar sports.

Spot on - who would've known Shane was right up there with his hockey trivia. Then again, who would know if he wasn't.

The logic behind helmets is that what hurts the brain is the maximum acceleration/deceleration it experiences. As a rule of thumb, the deceleration is proportional to the square of the change in speed and inversely proportional to the stopping distance. We can't do much about the speed. The helmet is designed to increase the stopping distance. Modern cars have a crumple zone for the same reason, the slowing down of the driver/passengers takes place over a longer distance, decreasing their maximum deceleration. The airbag does the same thing, as well as spreading the force rather than allowing all of it to be delivered by the steering wheel or dashboard.
So the thicker a helmet is, the more effective it is, provided it is made of stuff that crumples. Hence the fairly thick layer of polystyrene-like stuff in bicycle helmets. But I can't imagine football players being happy with a thick helmet. It would affect their mobility and peripheral vision.

If you drop a can of beer, the can it will crumple and it will leak but the inside still gets shaken up.
