Rory Lobb, Stephen Hill and Bailey Banfield were spotted hopping out of the Cockburn 50 m pool on Saturday morning. Lobb had gait more ginger than Tobe Watson's skyline abomination. Banfield could barely walk at all. Both got out, strapped on moon boots and hobbled up the stairs. Stephen Hill looked like a cheeky kid, smiling and joking around. Couldn't tell what was holding him back apart from the choice of budgie smugglers.

A short while later, Mitch Crowden and Darcy Tucker hopped in for a few laps. Crowden looked healthy apart from the missing neck. Tucker can't swim very well.

Based on this poolside action that has nothing to do with footy, I can't see any footy in any of them for a fair while yet.

Gerard Neesham would never have drafted Tucker.

The drafting has been alright, thats not the reason for that debacle on the weekend.

We`ve got four key forwards Lobb, Tabs, Cox and Treacy.
three Rucks: Darcy, Meek and Lobb with Tabs as emergency in- game cover.
Four key backs Hamling, Logue, Pearce and Chapman.

I can just imagine the complaints about our midfield if we hadnt drafted Brayshaw, Cerra and Serong.

Could the drafting have been better? - yes maybe in hindsight if we knew every key position player for the last 3 years was going to be injured. Would we be saying the same things if four midfielders had gone down instead of the KPPs?

Our injury record for as long as I can remember (at least 10 years) has been absolutely shocking. Why I dont know but we would be a totally different looking club if that could be solved and we even had only half the injuries the Toast have had over the same time period. Injuries and selecting players that cant dispose of the ball are our two biggest issues.

Not quite, because Longmuir and Fyfe have already staled that Cox is now our number one backman. Lobb is a ruckman/forward and not really excellent at either.
Plus there was talk during the off season that Pearce and Hamling would be iffy. It's great that they came back but with their history surely you should take precautions with your drafting.
We delisted four talls and drafted one, and kept two with long term injury issues.

I don’t think it helps that some of our bigs are built like volleyball players.

My question to the coaches is;
If Darcy was right to play and would have come in had Tabs not been ready, why didn’t he play in the goal square and we could have used Pearce in the backline?
IMO we will see a much better forward set up with Darcy and Tabs this week and hopefully a lot less intercept marking by the opposition, Tabs can lead up to high half forward and leave Darcy and a crumbling forward deep in attack. I would also like to see our best ball users delivering into the forward line, Mundy, Cerra, Young. So get them into the wing or high half forward and tell them to take the half chances when they appear.

Edit: also whoever suggested Acres could play a negating role on Lever should be banned from the game day coaches box, he would have to be the least contested ball winner on our list, useful racking up possessions by being in constant motion on the wing and finding space. Literally any of our medium backs would have done a better job, Conca, Hughes, Young or Ryan, at that stage we still had Cox and Hamling in the backline to cover their two talls.

‘Crumbling’ forward? Bit of a Freudian slip there, Purple Kit.

I'm not sure about that placekick, we do have an abundance of them.

Talking up Cox as our number 1 backman was surely just to boost Cox's confidence.

By half time I’d lost my voice. Kept shouting anyway. Had no voice box for two days and am raspily talking now. My two biggest sprays:
i. calling Langdon a traitor, loudly and a lot. Made him miss his set shot. Then the bugger nailed one on the run and celebrated to the crowd right where I was. More fool me, I suppose.
ii. Telling Pearce to get off the ground. “Look after yourself!” “No use staying out there, get your body right kid!”
It was an abject lesson in the fact that I have no control over the game. Only over my own experience. It was great to be at the footy, shouting and making an ass of myself, quarrelling with the opposition fans and sharing knowing looks with the purple clad brothers, sisters and non-binary kin.
Looks like another season of more defeats than victories on the field. But gosh it’s good to be out there riding it all with the purple clad warriors, on-field and off.
Maybe next week we’ll be cleaner, kick some more goals...
But I hope y’all enjoy being there as much as I did.
And I hope you have as little regard for your vocal-chords as I did.

No one has mentioned the ridiculous starting time for the Melbourne game. It's tough enough being an away game but no one is ready to play at 8.45 in the morning, hence the jump Melbourne got on the dockers, they had barely woken up. We have seen this many times, next week will be a totally different game. A better start will breed confidence and skill improvement and even after that debacle, I’ll be tipping a dockers win. Mad? Quite possibly but the history of this happening is pretty solid. Top 8 will be all the talk next week at this time, wait and see.
