TOPIC: Standing the mark rule

I’m not sure how many saw this incident yesterday. Hopefully it isn’t a sign of things to come. The ump who made this call has no feel for the game or understanding of the rule. Cox turned his back, nothing more, nothing less. He didn’t move sideways and didn’t stop the kicker from playing on (if he wanted to). Please don’t let this be the first of many appalling interpretations of this rule.

I like how Jude Bolton ‘feels for the umpires because they might get the game right for the whole time and have one incident that fans are just going to lose their minds over’, then promotes the one incident out of a hundred where the umpire got it wrong.

Yeah, maybe it's just me but they keep bringing in rules changes to make the game 'look better' and they invariably make it look worse while not achieving the desired result.

Somebody needs to make the fairly obvious realisation that Hocking is an idiot and well out of his depth.

Not allowing the defender to take a single step just allows the game to be manipulated further. If the player with the ball plays on, the defender can't move. All the umps has to do is delay calling play on and the player with the ball has a huge advantage. Dare I say it, free kick West Coast.

In the end, what will happen is what always happens, the coaches who individually are smarter than AFL House combined, will devise tactics to negate yet another stupid rule change. The scoring will go back to it's normal level and the biggest impact will the overly stupid number of 50 meter penalties for an offence that doesn't even warrant a firm comment.

Hocking is a cretin who needs to learn to leave the game alone and the coaches will fix the scoring. All he's doing is making the game look ridiculous.

I would like to think there is a happy medium between players being forced to be statutes, and players aggressively manning the mark on 45 degree angles from the mark and umpires needing to bust out their mental protractor to determine whether they have overstepped the ‘arc’ of the mark. I’m not sure if exists. I’ve certainly been annoyed the last few years by opposition players cribbing the mark ostensibly because they are moving outside of the protected zone.

It’s a watch and see from me. I actually think this might end up being a lot easier for umpires to adjudicate.

I am not tech savvy enough to put clip of it on this post, but I saw, in the Freo highlights package, vision of I think Tobe Watson standing the mark inside the defensive 50. He was looking at the umpire as the eagles player went around on the mark, obviously playing on, and Watson was imploring the ump to call play on, knowing full well he could not even raise an arm in appeal without getting a 50. The ump called play on as the eagles player kicked the footy, about 10 meters wide of the mark.

The Wiz would love this rule - I reckon he would kick over a hundred in a season with a stationary mark in front of him.

He'd give them all back the other way because he couldn't stand still.

No one could run around the man on the mark like Jeffrey - sell candy and give a bit of lip on the way by.

So presumably when someone is lining up for goal after the siren one member of the opposition will have to nominate as the "official" man on the mark and stand there like a statue, while the rest of the team can be just behind and to the side of him prancing around like idiots?

Polly, Jeffery never sold candy. He sold the dummy.

RR, they do that now.

What I want to know is that if you're not standing the mark - i.e. standing 1-5 m behind the mark, are you still allowed to run up to the mark (and then "stand") while the player comes at you... Or do you have to "stand" even if you're 1-5 m behind the mark... Confusing
