Ok, I gave it an honest objective assessment tonight. Nope, it was way better with Bruce - C7 over did, too many in your face gushing good ol' boys. JB was only slightly worse than Hodgey - same old "hows that golf score Punter?' stuff. Abysmal - makes the Big Bash commentary reserved in comparison.

One aspect of 'modern' broadcasting that gives me the irrites is the cheering on players / teams and Bruce was just as bad as anybody else. This player was special or delicious or gushing over this team or that. It's sickening.

Just call the game. It doesn't need any fake rahrah to make it exciting. It's an exciting game all by itself, when it's allowed to be. Bruce's gushing was horrendous. Brayshaw, Brian Taylor and the like appear to believe the more they yell and the less actual content is the key to a matchday experience. Even Commeti spent his time trying to be over-clever, although he was certainly more understated than the current crop of screaming imbeciles. Baz is a failed wannabe Commeti but with less talent, less charisma and less welcome.

Maybe it's my age speaking but the old days of Drew Morphett, George Grilusich and the like, who concentrated on calling the game, not taking sides and not talking up or down potential player reports. To me, all of that just smacks of unprofessionalism and attempts at manipulation.

I'm not sure that I can point to a commentator these days that isn't actively partisan on their comments and the result is they can't call the game properly because of the spin they try to impart.

It must be my age but too much has changed and not for the better

Totally agree Yeti. Too much has changed and not for the better, but that's certainly not limited to game calling. So many things have changed for the worse imo, that i just don't have the amount of interest or enthusiasm for the game I grew up with, that I used to have.

I was never a big fan, but the dude would do credibly at everything from biathlon to boxing and obviously deeply loves afl.

Always seemed like a complete tool of a bloke to me, but he was definitely really good at his job.
