There is a saying attributed to Verna Myers that diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance. Eddie thinks Collingwood is an inclusive club, and in some ways it probably is. But there’s likely an unwritten third limb to that saying, that if someone at the party doesn’t feel like dancing and they tell you it’s because they were being called a racist name, you need to listen and get to the bottom of it, even if it means the party stops for a while.

I just don’t think Eddie's reckoned with what systemic racism is. I think when many people hear ‘systemic racism’ they think it means there are bunch of overt racists wandering about the place being antagonistic to people because of the colour of their skin. I haven’t read the report, but Collingwood’s failures, like many (most?) organisations, seem much more subtle and pervasive than that.

Commissioning the report and seemingly giving the authors a wide remit was a good start. The problem is that Eddie and the club needed to listen to what the authors were saying (echoes there that they should have listened more to Héritier in the first place); but Eddie in particular just can’t seem to accept, or at least say out loud, that some of Collingwood’s failures were racist. He doesn’t want Collingwood to be thought of as a racist club, and so he’s attempting to wish it away or at least minimise the issues as a failure of process - which it also is - but it misses the broader point in terms of who was hurt most by that failure.

As for Tanya Hosch and the AFL, I think they are in a tight spot. My concern would be that some cynical people might take the lesson that commissioning a report in the first place is a bad idea. As uncomfortable as it is to hear, I understand why the AFL is focusing on the importance of the report rather than Eddie’s terrible public response to it.

I eagerly await when the Hawks are hauled into this debate given they waited for some 60 years until drafting an indigenous player. It went against their recruiting strategies.
Not sure what took them so long given the quality in the WAFL and SANFL that was on display.
Im sure anyone who saw Cl, SD and SF at their peak would agree what a fantastic addition indigenous players were to a team and were major weapons.
It was there even earlier with Syd Jackson & Polly Farmer gracing their comp too - its puzzling really.

Take away Collingwood's black stripes - get another colour or just keep the whole thing white.

Brilliant. They can have one stripe back a decade for good behaviour.

Not sure what else you'd be expecting. After all this is the same man that referred to Adam Goodes as King Kong on his morning radio show, directly after he was racially abused by the young girl at the MCG?

Morgan, the AFL are not in a tight spot, they enable all the problems exposed in regards to racist attitudes amongst club officialdom, by not dealing with the problem. You cant tell me that Gillon & co don't hear the remarks that many regard as "casual racism" , think that it's ok for Eddie to just brush aside the accusations, refuse to acknowledge the wider problem with administrations and media.

As for the glory days of the early 80's, while the coaches of the Tigers, Souths, and Swans were honest in their attempts to bring an end to the racist attitudes prevailing at the time, administrations, media, supporters, and some players were not on the same page. Imagine what a different footy world we could have seen, had the people at the top, and the media had the guts to fully support Brownie, Toddy & Mossy.

Some of these people don't understand that they don't understand , and that is scary enough but there are a lot that just don't give a **** in this case.

Without wanting to incite Shane to start defending Peter Helier, have a look at the treatment of Heritier on The Project back in 2017.

I don't even know who Peter Helier is.

Don't hate me because I haven't made Eddie McGuire the centre of my world.

Eddie is going, regardless, which is good because he is a blight on the game. But Eddie doesn't work at the club. Him going doesn't make life better for the next Héritier Lumumba or the young black kid on the other side of the country who gets sacked for being late to the plane.

Eddie and most people running AFL don't think to deeply about stuff, because they don't know how. The discussion, when they're forced to have one, never gets far beyond - 'This isn't good. Something needs to be done. How do we look after the brand'?

For sure - get Josh Simpson or Joel Wilkinson on tv for a comment, that might get Tanya Hosch out of her passive avoidance stance.
