I think Shane has touched on this a few times, however, James Aish’s comment in the West is intriguing:

“The club gave us a program for the whole off-season. So I know the SA guys, we followed it really well and had a really good block. So I feel ready to go now,” he said.

So was it the off season or not? Surely these guys deserve some time that isn’t controlled by their employer. No wonder we are hearing so much about mental health issues.

I don't really see it any different to other jobs which require you to do learning/skills improvement in your own time to keep your job. They get plenty of time off during the year where they aren't training, it's not that difficult to remain reasonably fit over the holiday period.

You'd hope they were providing the programme as a guide for someone who wants to maintain good condition during their break, and not stipulating it be followed.

The AFL negotiated a minimum annual leave, if they're asking a player to do work during that period then it's wage theft.

Returning to work after holidays is the biggest sucky time dealing with all manner of carp.

If I was presented with evidence that going for a jog, lifting a few heavy things and eating good would make the first week, weeks or more back at work after holidays much easier for me, I'd do it.

It could even be handy if it was written on a piece of paper for me.
