TOPIC: What the....Farmer

WTB, I saw plenty of his grandfather, uncles & great uncles, Jeff Jnr is not the only player in the Farmer wider family with prodigious talent. For every Zac Mainwaring, there is more than one John Kennedy Jnr.

I'm not actually too sure PK. As far as I know we can add to the category B rookie list at any time if we have an open spot but I'm not sure if that extends to players from the NGA academy or not.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Just wondering Biz, at what age do father/son privileges expire? Are they only available at age 18/19 or can a 21/22 year old be picked up as a father/son signing? Say for example a Chayce Black turn in a great season in 2021 and be nominated by us as a father/son draft priority?

I reckon a list of sons of prodigiously talented footballers who didn't follow in their father's footsteps into WAFL let alone AFL would far outnumber those that did.

Maybe so, but I would feel embiggened if my team had a Farmer, a Wanganeen, a Kickett and a Pickett, a Burgoyne, any Rioli and a whole bunch of local royal family members on it. That's just me.

Not if they were rubbish.

You lock out the next Kickett, Farmer and Wanganeen when you give someone the job just because you knew their dad

Not to mention the unwarranted expectation that is placed upon a young kid just because of his surname.

I reckon you would be bloody (run over a black cat while walking under a ladder) unlucky to get a Farmer or a Rioli, or a Pickett for that matter, who would be a dud footy player.

I'd love nothing more than seeing the son of The Wiz playing for us.
However, ...2 things are working against him.
1) the covid list size constriction,
2) our need to draft 'certainties' rather than 'hopefuls'.

We've had 20 odd years of selecting blokes who "could be anything' but turn into nothing (ie taking hopeful 'chances' )...and I guess i'm pretty comfortable with all the draft selections of the last 3 years, because they all seem to have 'pretty solid' developmental track records.

I'm not sure Kobe's been knocking the door down...and being noticeable enough' for us to 'take a chance' on him.??

For comparisons sake, how scintillating was Jeffery at the same age, RM?? ...and is Kobe showing much of it??

In any case, I hope Melbournes punt comes off. The AFL can only be better with more Farmer magic in it...

I wish the kid all the best and hope he makes a real go of it.

Polly Farmer's sons Dean and Brett played WAFL. Brett managed 69 games across three clubs and Dean 52 games for two clubs. Not AFL standard and nowhere near their famous father.

This discussion is getting a little bit weird. Anyone reading this thread would think that some contributors only see ‘bloodlines’ in indigenous players and that they are an indisputable indicator of talent (and that maternal genes are irrelevant). I get that genetics are important (I used to teach the topic), however, a dad’s talents are not always transferred in total to a son. Recruiting based solely on a paternal family name is just silly. Rather than “For every Zac Mainwaring, there is more than one John Kennedy Jnr.” I’d argue that “For every John Kennedy Jnr, there is more than one Zac Mainwaring, but we don’t hear about them because they can’t play footy”

I agree WTB even brothers have different capabilities. The real advantage for sons is the doors that open and the dads experience in getting to the top.

I originally mentioned Zac Mainwaring as he could have been taken as father/son but is not quite ready yet. I've seen him play and he has ability but needs more exposure to bigger bodies as he found it tough in the GF. I'm interested to know however is how long can he be eligible as father/son nomination? Is there an age limit to father/son?
Someone like Dillon O'Reilly could yet be AFL potential but needs time to mature.

Yeah...I dunno WTB.

I was a useless footballer, and they tell me my Dad was too.! My sons don't seem to be much chop at it either!!. And, I reckon a fair pecentage of society could proffer (and boast) similiar hereditary football statistics...!! :)

Its definitely genetic.... :)

And as far as indigenous footballers go, i reckon "the acorn never falls far from the oak tree."
I'm struggling to think of fantastically skilled fathers who don't have similarly skilled sons. The bloodlines run strong in the GNFL, for instance, and footy is all the better for it.
'Application' is perhaps the only thing that seperates fathers & sons, because skills are well & truely catered for.....
The more we see these skills in the AFL, the better the game will be.!!
