Former top AFL recruiter Matt Rendell has lauded Fremantle’s 2020 draft haul as one of the best in the competition after picking up four WA players in the NAB AFL National Draft on Wednesday.

Freo rounded out the draft period with the selection of promising key forward Josh Treacy from country Victoria in the rookie draft.

I don't know but I don't think they would have rated his opinion if Rendell had been critical.

Rendell seemed most excited by our NGA picks, and while I’m sure there is plenty to be excited about with Western and Walker, it’s worth noting that they were late-round selections because no-one else tried to take them before that.

Flags can be swung by hitting on very good players late in the draft, but grading a team’s draft performance on the players taken at the end of the draft focuses on the wrong thing. In assessing this draft, Chapman is probably the swing-piece. Pick 14 can be a tough place to draft. I’d be more interesting in what people thought about that pick.

I hear pundits highlighting our late NGA picks but they were no brainers and we may have got lucky that we had priority access.
The bigger questions are around the first two picks when we could have chosen other players. Only time will tell if we got those two right but the experts are mixed in their views about those picks.

You can say everyone passed on them until late but that doesn't mean it's a true reflection of their value. Most if not all would have had Walker landing around the 20-30 mark based on current talent let alone ability to improve while Western wouldn't have been far behind.

It's the circumstances behind the late bids that have resulted in the NGA kids providing such a boost. The limited number of players selected and draft picks used by clubs meant there were far fewer 'dummy' bids for the kids already tied to clubs and less incentive to bid on them at all. If you only have 2 picks in the draft then you're far less likely to try and bid for a kid already tied to a club, let alone in a year where a lot of kids weren't seen and you think you could get a lot of value out of someone else who others may not know about.

The system and draft really worked for Freo this year and we've probably picked up 4 top 30 kids this draft which is massive considering what we had at the start of the trade/draft period. I still think it was a big mistake throwing away another future pick so I'd mark us down for that but overall, you'd have to be happy with how it went.

If these guys can get a game or two in 2021 to prove themselves then that will be great.
I'm sick and tired of having our picks toil away in the 2nds for 2-3 years before seeing them... or worse, not seeing them at all as they become unlisted as they proved to be dudds.

I think Essendon selected Walker and we put in the bid that got him. The proof will be in the pudding as the wise man said.
Jack Carroll for O'Driscoll maybe?

Giving up a future 3rd to trade up 2 places to grab O’Driscoll seems very odd in retrospect, Collingwood ended up taking Poulter with our pick 29, who I would have been just as happy with, or they would have taken him at 27 and O’Driscoll would have had to get past one more club to get to our pick. Carroll was still on the board at that stage, so one of the three was going to get to our pick anyway.

Collingwood reported that West Coast also made a play for pick 27. Our future 3rd was needed to land the pick. Otherwise O'Driscoll would likely be an Eagle .

I see on the club website photos of Hamling, Switkowski, Logue and Lobb training with balls.

A good insight into the draft here. Of particular interest the below as Dazza says:

During the break, Fremantle and West Coast vied for pick 27. The Eagles offered a second and third-round pick. Freo's David Walls trumped this with an offer of pick 30 and a future third for 27 and pick 59.

"Are we hell-bent on Poulter?" asked Guy. The Pies are keen on Caleb Poulter, a 192-centimetre mid/forward, from South Australia. They project he will be there at pick 30.

"We'll do it," Hine said of this Freo swap. Shortly afterwards, they complete a second deal with Walls for Freo's pick 47.

We may never know for sure, but the Eagles may have bid on our academy players as well, first at pick 27 for Walker, then again at pick 28 for Western.
All up the future 3rd rounder was a decent spend, noting we received pick 59 back just in case we needed the points.
