TOPIC: Singing the National Anthem

It was great to watch t he Wallabies singing the national anthem in the local indigenous language before last night's match.
In that respect rugby leaves AFL for dead.Surely our players can sing their own anthem at least even in English and with energy instaead of a few muttering and the rest shuffling.Very disrespectful, I think

A few counterpoints:

I. Anthems before internationals make sense. Anthems before domestic sporting events are conceptually a bit weird. You can’t really compare the Wallabies and the Dockers in that respect.

II. Advance Australia Fair sucks.

III. Even if we had a ripping anthem, there’s still a chance Aussies couldn’t be arsed singing it.

Conceptually and in moral terms, great idea. I wasn't sure, so I looked it up - there are over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups in Australia (with over 800 different dialects). It makes sense that you would select the particular language group of the ground a game would be played at - so roughly a dozen different versions that everyone would need to learn for the AwFL.

Admittedly I've always admired the Kiwi anthem because of this, it sounds good and sounds right. My mother country anthem is rightly bilingual as well - everyone knows the words (even though the passages sung in English and those sung in French can change depending on which one you start with - sometimes it's sung totally in French, but never totally in English).

To be honest, I can't see how it would work in Australia - so it's probably best to just envy our neighbours across the ditch.

I love the idea but for the reasons mentioned above I’m not sure how it would work. I also imagine that some would find it difficult to reconcile with the opening lyrics
“Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;”?????

Yeah, way to completely miss the point, morgan.

The National Anthem, sung before any event is something to be respected. Whether you like or dislike the National Anthem is irrelevant. It is the National Anthem and represents the country so it needs to be treated with respect.

Speaking of respect, the original point was the respect shown by the Wallabies, the crowd and a great many Australians (judging by the Twitter response) to the local indigenous peoples. It's worth mentioning that the Wallabies spent time practicing the song in the Eora language so that they could sing it properly.

It isn't going to solve any of the important issues regarding health or opportunities but it is an important acknowledgement of indigenous Australia on the international stage.

Bloody well done.

They didn't respect lyrics or the people that have to sing it, when they put Girt in there...

I'm Girt by apathy to it. Watch others when its played. Most people are.

Perhaps a few Dockerlanders who could be arsed could get together over a kegger and organise to bust him out.

Or maybe after the kegger we won't remember what we "organised" and give it a miss.

If the pre-game was a song or performance from the people of that country the game is played on, yeah, do it. The kiwi anthem in Te Reo sounds good, but like "Advance Australia Fair", all it is is a colonial relic. There are many different waiata (songs) from the many different peoples of NZ that could be performed, as is done with the haka.

Yeti, I think there were (at least) two points being made by Quinninup: that the national anthem in the local indigenous language before the rugby was great (which it was), and that it’s disrespectful for players to only halfheartedly sing the national anthem, which I personally think is incorrect. My points were addressing the latter, and the flawed comparison between the two.

I’m not advocating for disrespecting the anthem, I just don’t think anything short of full-throated singing counts as disrespect.

Advance Australia Fair sucks. It’s a bad song melodically, lyrically and it was written for a white Australia that doesn’t really exist (and probably never did). It sounded good in another language, but for the record, the part in the language of the Eora Nation wasn’t the National Anthem, because while Advance Australia Fair can be performed in another language, Government protocols on the anthem require that it should not be represented as a version of the Australian National Anthem unless it’s sung in English.

Speaking of English, check out one of the original verses:

When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
"With all her faults we love her still"
"Britannia rules the wave.

Stirring stuff, if you’re British. Obviously you can whack a coat of new lyrics, or a new language over the top, but it’s the same stodgy British song underneath. There are plenty of reasons to dislike the anthem – I enjoyed Briggs’ take – and for the most part I consider it something to be endured rather than enjoyed. I quite like it on ANZAC Day or the Grand Final, but that’s more about the occasion and the noise that follows. The Perth Wildcats play the bloody thing before every game, which I hope never makes it to the AFL.

Hopefully in my lifetime someone will change the anthem to something inclusive, stirring and Australian. In the meantime while it’s played I’ll stand quietly and politely, and if I was a player I’d do the same. If one of my indigenous teammates didn’t want to stand, I would sit to support them. I don’t think any of that is disrespectful.

Lots of great points being made. Without wanting to comment on each, I would just like to say that the intent behind the singing of the dual language anthem is hard to fault. Good on rugby union for doing something original (for Australia) in an effort to further advance the reconciliation processes. Every small step helps even if in this case largely symbolic. The fact that the majority of the players seemed to know the words also shows a degree of commitment to the concept and should be applauded.

As for other discussion around the content and merit of the English language version, it’s a can of worms, much like the inclusion of the Union Jack on our flag, which must be a source of sadness for all indigenous peoples. That said, I still applaud the ARU’s decision to take an innovating and brave approach to the current national anthem.

Why would anyone bother to sing a ‘national’ anthem, which isn’t widely accepted, in a local indigenous language or dialect?
