The AFL could delay releasing its 2021 fixture until February as it navigates the challenges of a COVID-19 affected world.

But league boss Gillon McLachlan has confirmed next season will revert back to 22 rounds, instead of the 17 in 2020.

Also looking at 18 min quarters .

22 rounds because that’s what they sold to the broadcasters, I am sure they’ll push for more if they can get more $$ from their existing agreement. Hence the potential for shorter qtrs. I did note that the recent amendment to the player’s agreement included them getting a slice of the pie if the afl earned more than their forecast.

It's not just more games and longer quarters that they want. The reason that the AFL wants higher scoring games is that more goals = more advertising opportunities. Ultimately that's what pays the bills. That's why when you look at some of these rule changes, they're all about moving the ball quickly or creating more scoring opportunities. The problem has always been that traditionally the only time to show ads has been when a goal is scored and the field resets. The next phase will be the introduction of rules that mean more resets during the game, like this zones proposal they'll be trialling next year. It will require a pause while people reset, maybe 15 sec will be enough to slip in a sneaky ad.

Maybe they could stop tampering with the rules and just randomly introduce 2 minutes of ads per quarter. That would make it easier on the players and would remove all the pretense about the rule changes being about "improving the game".
