I haven't seen Western play but 171 centimetres and 64 kilos is very small for an afl player. Would need a few pre seasons.

I'm sure Longmuir has a few Hungry Jacks coupons left over that he can give him over the summer.

I'm unsure why people put such an emphasis on drafting our Academy kids. Have any of them, apart from the possible exception of Henry, done much?

Well yeah, if you'd watched them.

By that definition, why draft any kid? What has any ever done?
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm not talking about those we are about to draft. I'm talking about those we have drafted before. From memory none of them with the possible exception of Henry have gone on to have careers. Supporters seem to get tied up in knots over whether we have the right draft position to snare our Academy kids. Is it worth the bother? I don't know and am interested what others think.

They were all speculative rookie picks, taken as category B rookies which are outside the main list. They weren't taken in the main draft because they were coming from a long way off. The academy system and being able to throw them onto the rookie list like Collingwood did with Mason Cox or like all the Irish Gaelic footballers meant we basically had a free hit at them.

Henry was good enough to be taken in the open draft and so are Walker and Western. We're likely to take at least one more academy kid as a speculative rookie this season, likely Haddow or Chris Walker.

That's the reality of it but there is also occasionally a bit of an attitude from some people that, merely by being on our Academy list, the players are magical unicorns that we can't possibly miss out on.

Then there's a whole bunch of other opinions that reckon we need a brolga - magical unicorn or a brolga from northern Victoria? Yep, tough choice - I just go with whatever Biz thinks.

Fans are going to talk players up ahead of a draft, it's what they do. Knowing you're locked into a player if they progress well makes it much easier to track them.

I haven't seen too much of anyone overrating our NGA kids. Henry who's the only one taken in the open draft was selected by Carlton well before most fans and draft pundits expected him to go (which was the mid teens). The rest of our NGA kids were taken with rookie picks which is about what they were worth and where they were expected to go.

This year most draft pundits have B Walker a top 20 chance but most likely in the early/mid 20's while Western is probably about 10 spots later in the draft. I haven't heard anyone here say any more than that which is the equivalent of non-supporters. Either way, we wouldn't select either before another club put a bid in so the club won't be overrating them. We've also passed on many NGA kids and will do so again with 1 Cat B spot this draft being fought for between C Walker, Haddow and Alvarez.

Of all the years to go to a draft with late picks this would be the year wouldn't it? Who knows what the true player ratings are in the absence of all the assessment stuff they do.

What's our picks again?

It would be but those picks will be absorbed by Walker/Western. Should be some good rookies around though.

Next year was also predicted to be a very strong draft (some absolute gun mids coming through) and with no Vic or representative footy this year, those draft year bolters (like Bontempelli or Oliver) haven't had a chance to push their case. They'll all crowd the draft next year so I would've liked to have seen us stock up on picks for 2021 over trade period (also because we have some more quality NGA kids and father sons available).

What's your thoughts on Leno Thomas, Biz? We've delisted a whole bunch of better credentialled players and Leno is still there. He must be doing a lot right in JLo's eyes and shown a bit of promise to still be in the running for a 2021 spot on the list .He did win Claremont colts the 2019 Premiership with his last minute smother and must be showing a lot of dedication and application on the track.
