TOPIC: An hour with JLo

It's not to do with Lyon. Walters was struggling with the club, he got better and became one of the club's greatest players.

He had a scarce football talent which could have been lost if people had dealt with it the way you describe.

Walters was not performing, was told to pick his game up, sent back to Swans, get fit and show he wanted to be an AFL footballer at Freo. To his credit, he did that. Same scenario with Clancee Pearce. I don't see any difference to the situation this year.

Simpson was a bit different, he wanted to play footy, somewhere, but was told to get on planes and watch games instead.

How it was done isn't relevant. The point is that it was done. You were effectively advocating for Walters to be cut rather than sent back to Swans.

I'm not advocating that Hogan be sent to the Swans, just commenting about the concept that some people have more unique abilities than others and the football managers who are best at extracting that will have the better teams. As a blanket concept, expecting the player to perform or get out sounds tough but the goal is to win at football.

If Hogan makes GWS a better team I’ll be rapt for both GWS and Hogan himself. Strange thing to say for a Dockers supporter but they have taken a risk and if it comes off all power to them. If Hogan is playing well and without distracting incidents that means he is on a far better path and getting away from Perth was a positive for him.

What if Walters, having been given 2nd or 3rd opportunities and finally shipped back to Swan Districts with quite specific instructions on what and where to improve, had gone back to the club no different than before? He would have been sent packing, meaning all of that talent and ability would have been lost to Freo and footy.

I'd suggest that this is a very likely Hogan scenario. Despite which, I think the club is still trying to help the bloke out, with a cheap move to another club (on a 1 year contract), while maintaining his privacy as far as possible, by not going full public reveal on whatever highly personal issues he has that seem to make him a square peg in a round hole wherever he goes.

Sometimes, things just don't work out, no matter how much effort is spent trying.

I wasn't advocating for anyone to be cut, what I said was that McCarthy & Hogan have not performed so something had to happen.

I wasn't supportive of Walters & Pearce being sent back to Swans to sort themselves out as I thought there would be more negative influences on them away from Freo than at Freo, it turns out that both players had an intense desire to prove their detractors wrong, and they both did that.

What has happened to McCarthy & Hogan has nothing to do with their "quirky personalities" or anything else other than the fact that they have not performed to expectations. Until we know what discussions took place before the release of these 2 players, it is pretty pointless to apportion blame at any 1 individual, or even at a culture failure at the club. Michael Johnson, Walters, C Pearce, Ballas, Waterhouse, Bradley and plenty of others have brought "quirky" or "hard to handle" to the club, but have succeeded.

We say things like "sometimes things just don't work out" and "he'll be better away from Perth" far too often.

The two major spending areas of football clubs are players and people who will try to get players to perform at their optimum.

We have a history of replacing talented players who aren't performing as well as they should be but backing in members of the football department who aren't performing as well as they should be. We also have a history of mates putting mates into those roles.

I have said plenty of times that non- or under-performing off-field staff need to be moved on for the good of the club.

Unfortunately or not depending on whether you’re unemployed and have a great mate, ‘mates putting mates into those roles’, whether male or female happens in the private sector, AFL included, and often in the public sector which isn’t meant to be the case, That’s just the way it has been and always will be.

I think the dollars thrown at and number of human resources to watch over 44 or so young men and make sure everything is hunky dory is overstated. Any father or mother will tell you it’s hard enough making sure sons and daughters come through the mill ok.

FFC seems to be in a good space after a tough year, I hope it continues.

I was thinking we wanted best practice, not the minimum standard we can get away with.

Disagree about Hogan and McCarthy not performing onfield. Limited chances and injury didn't help, but why weren't they given the same opportunities as Colyer and Bewley. I would much rather have had Dardy and Hoges playing than them.

With Mikey's rehab period with the Black Ducks, not many have accredited the depth of conditioning equipment available down at Basso HQ - at the time I went down and snapped a picture of their exercise bike (which has a proud record since being relocated one night out of the western suburbs back in 1939). Many of the legendary Swannies over the years have built their fitness on that bike - from Ted Holdsworth, through Jim Davies and well into the Haydn Bunton Jr era; John Todd had the chain regreased in the late '70s and by the time Mikey got on the bike it had already helped Andy Krakouer then Tim Geappen strengthen their set shots for goal routines:
