TOPIC: Freo Academy Kids

I read an article about Freo needing picks/points for their academy draftees.

Who are these kids? Any decent talls in them?

What happened to Hugh Dixon? Disappointed that he got axed, the only game he played wasn't bad...Lloyd Meek? what's his progress?

I think Lloyd Meek is coming along nicely. Dixon's out the door. The 2 academy players are Joel Western (high half forward) and Brandon Walker (running half back). These are the main ones. No talls.

Huge Dixon was Sibosadoed - one game, out the door.

Yeah, just like Casey. Listen, we're not some kind of social welfare agency - when we draft a tall kid they go to training and then they've got four quarters to prove their worth. If they can't manage more than Nyhuis on debut - let's say, four goals or more - it's out the door. There's always more in a dozen years or so in the draft that would leap at a chance to play one game.

Or how about 12 games like Apeness.

Or Strdnatica (?) - i dont think that kid even got one game. Could be wrong...

Let's not forget Gemma Houghton's brother - Joel never got a game either. Good player.

Fact is, we've had a truckload of tall forward types that were never developed. I reckon there's years of negligence behind that, maybe we just don't like those big blokes that can kick goals.

We had 7 years where any type of development ran second to getting players fit enough to run an ultra-marathon every day. The only players who shone in that time were those who had rare talent to begin with, or who developed under the previous regimes. Look at Nyhuis, Darcy, Tabs, and Apeness, showed something early to get into the team as young players, but none have been properly nurtured by Lyon & co. Some have been persevered with because they had something that we needed, (Darcy as ruck, Tabs as a running big man) the others were thrown on the scrapheap without being given a real development program.

The AFL have just announced the destruction of the academy selections with top 20 NGA picks no longer available to be matched by the club that has developed them after this year.

The AFL will be taking over the academies from clubs who will have far less incentive to develop kids from different or remote backgrounds. I can't see the AFL maintaining the amount of effort and resources that Freo have put into our regions and the good work done by Tendai, Roger and MJ. I'd expect a number of kids to miss out on opportunities as a result of this decision.

I can understand the AFL taking control of the academies from a financial perspective but the effort and work put into some of the kids set to come through next year has occurred since the academies were set up. Freo in particular have invested a lot in academies and were set to reap the benefits next year with a number of good prospects including some like Bartlett and Motlop who could go first round. What kind of shenanigans are we going to see now as clubs hide their NGA's?

It's a shame those who are part of the academy already won't be tied to the club anymore.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

So I would imagine that includes the young Motlop kid who is in next years draft but we still get first dibs at Kobe Farmer due to Father/son rule. Are there any more father/son possibilities in next couple of years apart from Sean McManus' kid who may be rookie at best? Sorry Macca.
