I’m not a religious person, and there are some aspects of this article that I don’t align with (especially Hardwick invoking Allah in an effort to get Houli to play on after injuring his calf in the GF), but I do greatly admire Houli, (and other sportspeople) who use the high profiles to educate our communities (including ignorant Collingwood supporters*) and, in this case, also work quietly to improve the opportunities that are available to future leaders of their own communities. It’s a long read but it deserves to be widely read.
*as part of the Lumumba investigation, surely Collingwood also needs to closely examine why they are regularly cited as offenders in articles relating to racism. I accept that it occurs across all clubs, but from the President down the Magpies have a history of offensive behaviour.
