Fremantle Dockers eye Western Bulldogs premiership player Matthew Boyd to be AFL assistant coach

Fremantle are gunning to add Western Bulldogs premiership star Matthew Boyd to their coaching staff, as Justin Longmuir looks to find someone to take charge of the Dockers’ backline in 2021.

Boyd worked alongside Longmuir at Collingwood before the latter took the job as Fremantle’s head coach last year, with the 2016 Bulldogs premiership midfielder taking over as the head of the Magpies’ defence.

He might be alright, I don't know. He's done the job for a year so his biggest qualification for being poached seems to be that he's connected to the coach and CEO.

But the fact that he can be put in charge of an AFL team defence after a couple of years coaching the academy kids, then poached by another club that very season, suggests that he has a natural gift for coaching.

Collingwood’s backline wasn’t the problem, in fact it has been their strength all year. The incapacity to score is their biggest issue.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the culture that’s really building at Fremantle,” Boyd said.

“A big part of my decision to come over was clearly my relationship with Justin. He’s been an amazing mentor to me in the short coaching career that I’ve had so far and this was an opportunity to continue to learn from him.

“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Fremantle Dockers after a really positive year and I know that the footy club is heading in the right direction.

“To be a part of that at the start of a really exciting journey was something that appealed to me.”
