Brisbane are good example of how slowly, then quickly, things can turn around. Prior to the last 2 years they made the finals once in 14 years and players were jumping ship at their first opportunity.
The best path to contending still seems to be to ride out the draft for a while and then make a few judicious trades/FA signings when you hit on good young players and are genuinely on the upswing. Brisbane looks well set up, which is why I’m hoping they sign Daniher – signing a high-priced spud is the best way to undo lots of good work.
Freo are on the right path, but I don’t think we’ll ever be a club established Victorian player will be keen to join.
