I spotted this article a couple of days ago. According to the Telstra Tracker, the five Freo players that covered the most ground per game in 2020 were:

Matt Taberner, 12.3km
Brett Bewley, 11.9km
Blake Acres, 11.6km
Rory Lobb, 11.5km
Jesse Hogan, 11.3km

Bewley is a given, but the rest surprised me. Acres and Hogan had interrupted seasons so that’s a pretty good effort by them and bodes well for next season. Lobb playing between ruck and forward was always bound to rack up some distance, but that’s still pretty impressive.

But Tabs really stands out; he somehow managed to play closer to goal and run 12.3 km a game. Should we give all our players a training session off each week?

Tabs work rate is highly underrated. He often makes himself available on the wing for the release kick from the backline while also be the key target up forward (obviously not at the same time!!)
What’s disappointing is that our talls are the players running the greatest distances. Is this a sign that outlet mids are spending too much time rotating:resting on the bench?

Part of it is that B Hill, Langdon and Tucker were our top three last year.

I reckon it's great that we have all 3 of our big tall forwards capable of clocking up those numbers.
That is going to make it hard for opposition teams to defend when we they can get a bit more time to work out how to play together.
Ie who stays home and who covers some ground.

From the goal square up to the wing to mark the kick out of defence, and back to the goal square. Again and again and again...

And if we can keep a lid on Hogan.

And if we can get Lobb to actually find some form again.

That's all very well, but what's the effective disposal to kilometre ratio?

I've been told that chooks cover a lot of ground - if you cut their heads off, some go hell for leather and cover twice the distance in half the time. I wouldn't know of course, but that's what I've been told by someone who would.

Good point Polly. bewley might have covered a lot of ground but for a wingman he only averaged 14 disposals.

Lobb averaged 10 disposals, just under 4 marks and less than a goal.

My point is, I noticed Stephen's brother (can't remember his name but I've been told he's related) running all over the place on Saturday - there was rarely a tv shot without him zipping around somewhere in the frame. He got 12 disposals during the game - effective ones, not sure.

But good on him, on any of those blokes that go running all over an oval for a few hours every weekend. But plot the distance a Sherrin travels during a game to those admirable running kilometres per game and not one of them would come within shouting distance to that covered by the ball. Fact - we all know it, the ball will go further and faster than any one of them could hope for just by being kicked.

Absolutely.
More kicking = more goals.
Whether you have more running or not is only tenuously related and most likely irrelevant.

More kicking = less running = less injuries.

This is Jesse Hogan's heat map for Round 17 (4.0) and Round 18 (1.1). Obviously the second was a tougher game.
