TOPIC: WAFL GF

That was attacking football ay it's absolute best with Warren Ralph, Jim & Phil Krakouer, Brett Farmer and Steve Malaxos all kicking more than 50 goals and Ralph kicking 127.goals and Claremont averaging 159 points a game for the season. And this was when the WAFL was almost the equal of the VFL. We'll never see football like it again and it was not manipulated by rules or umpiring interpretations.

And don't forget someone called Moss.
I must be getting old as I agree with Gumnut and am nostalgic for them: those days are gone.
My favourite moment among so many was Moss leading towards the ball kicked from a centre clearance, going for the mark but tapping it left handed to a Jimmy runny past at full belt. Goal in less than thirty seconds.
So many moments from that team.

I must be of a similar vintage Im a bulldog through and through but geez there were some great players and teams in that era.

From 73 to 82 every team won a flag, all 8 of them with Perth and East Freo winning 2 a piece, hows that for an equal comp.
Every team had champions Subi had Featherby East Freo Peake West Perth Dempsey Whinnen and Fong Perth Wiley Couper East Perth Cable Duda Spencer and Kelly Souths TI Maurice Vigona Claremont Moss Krakouers Ralph Swans Boucher Shine Beazley and many I haven't mentioned. It was an era we will never see again but possibly the best decade of football this state will ever see.

I get goosebumps thinking about it and am so glad to be old enough to remember it.

Looking back, there was an automatic method of equalising the WAFL back then - the best players got asked to play VFL. And of course players always look better in winning teams, so the best teams would have a better chance of losing players.

Something I have been thinking about since it was mentioned in another thread is the possible effect of raising the draft age to say 22, with reduced list sizes, this could generate a lot more interest in the local football comps around the country, and would act as a normalisation mechanism on those comps as a very talented 21 could help a team to a premiership in the WAFL before being picked up by an afl club. It would also mean late bloomers had a better chance of being drafted and would de risk a lot of drafting decisions.

PK the ;later draft age isn't a bad idea, I have never ben comfortable with 17 and 18 years old's relocating across the country, some cope some don't. also many of our best young talent never play WAFL league and the clubs dont get the best out of the investment in them.

Perhaps if the rule was 40 league games or age 21 whichever comes first, this avoids the argument of the gun 16 year old having to play in the WAFL for 6 years before draft age, they play 2 seasons of footy and off they go, we get the see a gun in the WAFL and they get used to playing on grown ups and a re a bit older when leaving the nest.

I was against the idea of raising the draft age, but hadn't thought about how things worked in the VFL/WAFL/SANFL days. The Monteaths, McCanns etc came through quickly, the players that needed more time got more time. Today players are like racehorses, clubs buy them in bulk on pedigree and early trial form, and discard those who don't measure up in the early races.

You're an adult at 18 and able to make your own decisions. You shouldn't be excluded form playing AFL if you're good enough to be selected. I want to see the Rowell's and Serong's get a go and compete with the best, not waste away in second tier comps.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The thing they need to work on is making the second tier leagues better environments for the 19-22 year olds to stand out in. So clubs aren't having to make as many speculative picks on the 18 year olds who aren't the Serongs and Rowells.

Having the best 19-22yo players in the country would boost the quality, interest and revenue of the state leagues. IMHO this would add to the quality of the AFL as well as all players would be closer to their prime and teams would not be playing kids just to get games into them. Clubs would also be more inclined to draft the stand out 23,24 and 25yo players as they wouldn’t be seen as a “wasted” pick.
If revenue in state leagues was increased these players would still get the financial reimbursement they would be looking for.
The draft system of a set wage for the first two years would have to be abolished, the draft would end up more like the pre-season draft where players put a price on their 1st 2 year contract and clubs would have to decide if they want to pay said price at their pick.
