I thought our back line developed really well this year and functioned as a team rather than a bunch of running individuals. Given we didn't get smashed, despite our engine room not fully firing, the backs handled themselves extraordinarily well considering the amout of ball that came their way from the centre. I would have thought we would be looking at how to get more improvement from the centre to forward. I'd imagine Fredricks speed will be an attactive option on the wing, as could be Wilson, The rower would be nice to add to the centre. JLO is going to have a lot of fun with a full preseason I would imagine. We do have a really good squad. It will be interesting to see a couple of genuine goal sneaks dropped into the pockets with Walters. So in the draft, it would be nice to grab some genuine footballers with skills and instinct. Trading a Blakely might not be a bad result for all parties.

I recon were could do with a really good HR manager, rehab Fitness person / Team and maybe a really good white board holder.

I wouldn't take too much notice of Twomey's 25, he's pretty heavily based in Vic and it's reflected often in his rankings. He doesn't even have O'Driscoll in his 25 who most see as potentially a top 10 pick. Some of the other blokes he has in there are rarely seen in the top 25 of other draft experts, it's just his opinion.

I haven't seen a lot of Gowdie and there has been little to no talk of him. One game isn't likely to see him get drafted, a lot of the players discussed have a large body of work so I can't see him pushing his way in based off one ok game. It's not impossible he is selected but I can't see it happening.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

With a limited number of picks I think the priority with any trades is to increase our draft hand so Connor Blakely, as much as I like what he offers, is our main player to be drafted and I think we may see at least one of our defenders traded as well. It wouldn't even surprise to see a high profile player traded either and I 'm very concerned about Stephen Hill, on recent form, clogging our list unless he can be reinvented as a forward option.
With our late picks I'd like to see us look local as I think there are a few mature age gems for the taking if our recruiting staff do their homework. Guys in the 20-24 age bracket including Alec Waterman and others who deserve a second shot and can offer much needed depth. I only mention Waterman in particular because I think he is better than at least a couple of our current small to mid size forwards on our list.

Just my opinion but it could be we are hoarding backmen because there is a degree of uncertainty regarding if and when both Pearce and Hamling return from their injuries. If we lose both of them to their injuries then we will need the surplus of backman to step up and replace them. I think the club is playing it smart.

In regards to Hughes, there is no way he should be considered a trade. There has been a couple of comments on here alluding to the fact that he is getting a game because our backline has been decimated. Yet last season he played all 21 games and remember up until the Collingwood game that was at a point when both Pearce and Hamling were both playing. He also played all games this season demonstrating, an ability to read the play well, takes a really good grab and he adds a strong physical presence. Hughes is an established member of the backline and I believe JL and the club holds him in high regard and will not/should not be offered up as trade bait.

What would Pearce or Hamling be worth in terms of draft picks as possible trade ?

I would only let one go but we could get a good draft pick and save some cash for the salary cap.

No, and anyway if you were another club would you pick them up with their injury concerns?

Or want us to pick players from another club when there is talk they may not play again?

Logue and Young to become wingmen. Trade a couple of smalls ... we have more than we need.

The club has already gone on record that it will try to recruit a second ruckman forward and an outside speedy midfielder. That should cover our first 2 picks. As for getting rid of smaller forwards and blackley we would be lucky to get a early 3rd round pick for the lot. That in know way is too say they are no good but there were another half dozen of those players running around in the WAFL grand final that would easily slot into our side . Alex waterman would be a nice late pick/rookie to have on the list.

Do you think Adelaide may give us a third round pick for someone like Stefan Giro or, dare I say it, the Owl. Both South Australian boys who when we are at full strength are really only backup players.
The idea tossed up by Slammen, to offload either of Hamling and Pearce is not one which I would like to go down. They are both good clubmen, Pearce in the leadership group and Hamling a premiership player but despite their injury concerns still hold great currency for clubs like North Melbourne or Adelaide who are trying to build some strength of culture North in particular are going to look pretty stretched for tall defenders with Robbie Tarrant nearing retirement and they need leadership for what is looking like being a very young list next season.
What I don't like though is shopping around loyal servants of the club like Joel and Alex as trade bait. It reminds me of our offloading of Leigh Brown just after he had signed on in a show of loyalty to encourage Pav to commit to the club.

I think we need to keep The Owl, as some Victorian clubs (especially North) are sniffing around Shultz.

Speaking of The Owl, did you know he was referenced in The Tempest?

If North are interested in Schultz can we speak to the AFL to bring forward trade season before they change their minds. While he was serviceable this season, he doesn’t kick enough goals even as a defensive forward. I think he would be fairly easily replaced.

No human with an ounce of compassion would send one of their football players to North.

I wouldn't mind Alex Waterman as a rookie to put in our forward line. I was thinking of a trade - Jared Polec for Jesse Hogan. It's not an amazing result for us but it could be best for both parties with Jesse's indiscretions.

Do we need to keep a place on the list for this one:
"Another name to watch is Maurice Rioli Jr, the son of the late Richmond and South Fremantle champion Maurice Rioli Sr and cousin of current Tiger Daniel Rioli.

Rioli Jr is eligible to be a father-son selection for Richmond or Fremantle or could be picked up by Essendon through its Next Generation Academy."
