And what is the breakdown on who gets diverted, and who gets charged? That is the problem with these laws/diversion programs, casual bias still emerges in the enforcement.

yes, systemic racism is real and brutal in its effect - hence why the SA program is mandatory for first offenders and not left to police discretion.

WA is a long way behind - this year we finally were the last State to stop imprisoning fine defaulters, only 30 years after the Royal Commission.

so, what would be a fair punishment for these players' actions:

i) from the Crows?

ii) under the laws of the land?

Sounds like they've got a good system then.

I presume what will happen is that they'll get a $5000 fine and a strike and have to do some sort of AFL sanctioned programme, and then try to avoid moving to WA or NSW.

That is exactly what I mean, Shane, I have been involved in sport programs here in NZ, and also connect to Maaori and the same thing is happening here. If you are a rich (or even only slightly well off) white kid, you get diversion or Home Detention for knocking unconcious a police officer or killing 2 or 3 people in a car accident while under the influence or drag racing, if you are Maaori or Pasifika, you get jail for minor offences that barely rate a fine for the rich kids.

yes - and the fix for those problems needs to be something bigger and at a stage well before the police encounters.

but calling it out and demanding equal treatment (diversion for everyone) is critical. if we could solve that, maybe there'd even be hope for a fair and just MRP and AFL Tribunal...

Whoa up there fellas, the AFL essentially condone drug taking with their three strikes policy. The crime appears to be as far as the AFL is concerned is getting caught and brining the AFL into disrepute.

It appears South Australia system is handling this better than the AFL and minders.

Eggy, the AFL's 3 strick policy means that they essentially condone reality. Kids try drugs. And in most cases it is no big deal. Most of my mates smoked dope - and went on to long and successful professional careers. Some tried acid, ecstasy, etc, and went on to have long and successful careers. Almost all of us drank far in excess of the recommended amount but gradually dialled it back once we hit 30 and started having kids and careers.

Yes, there are some people for whom drugs are a serious problem - Ben Cousins for example. And the 3 strikes policy is only likely to catch players that are having problems with drugs.

RR, Eggy is right, the AFL is giving themselves wriggle room, if they want to protect a player they use the 3 strikes excuse, if they don't, some hack finds a miss sent e-mail in his inbox dropping some rookie from Armadale or Redfern in the manure for his indiscretion.
