Whilst Harley may have been paid a wage you think was a lot, there are grave concerns regarding the pastoral care he received. We also don't know if he was given useful training on how to retain/invest the money he was paid, but I would hazard a guess that Harley is not "set for life". I wish him well but wish I could be reassured about so many things that may or may not have occurred.

I don't think that level of paternalism is warranted.

Not Harley specific. I do not believe teenagers should be drafted and relocated to the other side of the country. I think the United States football league has in it's drafting rules that players must have been out of high school for three years before they can be drafted. I think that is a very good rule and we could do far worse than implementing a similar rule here.

Not sure if that’s the best example Tragic, in that collegiate system kids still move half way across the country and are placed in frat houses. Hardly the best places to set an expectation of moral standards. Although I guess they come out of with a degree of sorts.

"Despite not offering him a new contract after after he breached AFL protocols...the AFL and the AFL Players Association have been attempting to support Bennell throughout the past week."

Nothing says class act like a public disclaimer.

I am happy with the example Purple Kit. I don't have an issue with kids going to an interstate University because it is typically done with the oversight of people who care about the teenagers well being both now and into the future. AFL drafting is done in the perceived best interests of the football clubs, the AFL and the sponsors of the AFL. Player Managers measure value in dollars.
We have a system that has the potential to damage young people and the most vulnerable are at the most risk.

I totally agree with your earlier comments Shane and apologise if my choice of words put blame on Harley. My intention was simply to indicate that Harley’s situation was not simply and soley a reflection of poor management by Fremantle (in response to an earlier post). While Freo (and RoLy) may have contributed to his situation on and off the field, the Suns and Melb (and the AFL industry) all have responsibility. I had hoped for Harley’s sake that Melb would get him right. As mentioned in my post, if that had occurred, then the blow torch would be pointed directly at Freo.

Re the US NFL example: let’s not forget the large number of their players that go off the rails at some stage of their career. Encyclopaedias could be written about drug abuse, and domestic violence in those leagues.
They have is a long history of players being treated as expendable commodities. Pay them big bucks then spit them out. Young men, high testosterone environment, high incomes, with free time and public adoration - what a recipe for trouble. The NFL, EPL, US Baseball .... the AFL should be careful and cautiously study those leagues a bit more closely rather than aim to be more like them.

Hope he can get a productive life outside of footy. Should never of gone to the Gold Coast where the culture and oversight may not of been conducive for him.

I am not sure freo’s culture was much better for him and why we persist into get troubled souls to the club. Freo have an abysmal record , Simpson , Mc carthy to name only a couple.
The club has an unjustifiable arrogance about their ability and for the life of me I am not sure how they come to their conclusion.

Exceed, Freo has a better record than most clubs when it comes to trying to do the right thing by players. Maybe not so much in recent years, but we do try. Jeff Farmer is one who suffered, but that was mostly due to media trying to keep the spotlight off the eagles disgraceful conduct.
