Harley Bennell retires after hub breach

Would've loved to have seen more footy from him over the years.

Me too - let's add him after the draft and give him a few games.

Could’ve been anything, but unfortunately wasn’t.

Sums up the failings of our club during the Ross Lyon era.

Hopefully he’s got a rock solid plan in place for life after football to look after his family and himself.

He should open a veal restaurant. Even the score.

How many laps of the restaurant do you have to run before being served your main course?

Matebe: You can blame RoLy for a lot of things but I’m not sure that you can say that Harley’s retirement sums up our failings as club under RoLy. Remember, he also wasn’t a success at either the Suns or Demons. I think Freo would have looked a lot worse if he had played 50 games with Melbourne.

Gold Coast got him on the park 81 times in 5 years. We got him on the park 2 times in 4 years. You draw your own inferences.

that's roughly making it to 70% of available opportunities at GC, 2.5% at Freo and 18% at Melb...

Not good news.

It's another case of 'what might have been'. He wasn't well served at Freo by any means but he's done himself no favours over the years. Sad waste of a supreme talent

Freo had the worse of the deal with Harley , especially after wasting another pick which was an early second round pick. Complete and utter stuff up.
I do recall him playing 7 games in a row at peel one year and watching him tear up west Perth after his 7th game absolutely convinced he would play for freo.the week after.

Alas was not picked , probably because of Lyons manic game plan , the week after did his calf.

Fair point Matebe but the calf issues developed while at the Suns and they couldn’t get him right and he wasn’t able to get full game time or a regular game in a very ordinary Melbourne team before they had to let him go. I’m just saying that we (unfortunately) weren’t alone in not being able to get the best out of Harley and I would have happily been more critical of Freo if he had been a success (on and off the field) at Melbourne.

He was a huge success as a person. On and off the field.

He was let down by the industry. They roomed a young kid, along way from home, with a drug trafficker and left him mentored by a drunk and coached by a bloke who's management background involved 1 year at a WAFL club. Then treated him as a pariah because of it.

Then he got buggered about at Fremantle by a coach who was so lazy that he left selection to the fitness meatheads, who kept running him into the ground.

Even at Melbourne, who get credit for giving him a chance rather than Bennell getting credit for never giving up or dropping his head, they let them all get on the grog when they should have been preparing for a potential final, presumably because the old blokes who'd gone up there to escape quarantine were getting twitchy, and - what a shock - a bad decision is made by someone who hasn't had a drink for a long time.

And before the personal responsibility crowd jump in - he took it on himself to retire because of it.
