Young has been overlooked a bit since he was injured but he looks a star as well.

Young WILL be a star. He is as good as if not better than Sarong (who is very good). They are our likely A graders of the future.

Not improved a lot?

A buggered up season, and they still played better football than the last 5 years under Lyon.

Bugger the stats. Watch any game from last year and this, and tell me they haven't improved. The structure, the communication, handball speed and movement, the stingy backline, an attacking game that doesn't resemble betting your entire super on pork belly futures.

I always saw it as a transition year, it has been a good one, another preseason and the players will work better together and understand the game plan better. We unearthed some good youngsters and a few other guys particularly the defenders all improved. I think Jlo has done well in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

We are heading in the right direction.

WTB, is Sarong related to Kamahl?

PS, that sounds like a good title for a song Quasi.

Since the end of 2016 it appears we have in fact done a good job of rebuilding.
I like that Longmuir still thinks the draft is our way forward. Great to see a lot of youth blooded and given responsibility, although I don’t know if this would’ve been as successful if Brayshaw and Cerra hadn’t been developed up until this year.
Soooo good to see that a premium has been placed on skills.
I hope Longmuir continues with his no thrills no BS communication with the public. I love that he asked for protection for Fyfe and also put the case for AA representation for our best players this year. If Darcy gets stitched by the MRO I hope he calls it out. Lyon wouldn’t have done this.
I’m worried about our inability to score particularly if you watch a bit of Collingwood they can suffer from a very similar issue.
The most positive season for 4 years

Well I don't agree with Morgan, oddly enough.

Comparing 2019, a season of 22 games with 12 of them played at the Craypot, no COVID-19, uninterrupted pre-season for almost the entire squad, longer breaks between games and not having to adjust to a new game plan and then trying to suggest that season 2020 is in any way comparable is a little hard to comprehend.

In 2020, we had the team trying to learn a new game plan under a new coach that was made far more difficult when the squad was not allowed to train as a team until very late in the preseason. Then they spent two long stints in Queensland away from friends and family.

Yet, towards the end of the season, their performances vastly improved as they learned, adjusted and bought into JLo's ideas and plans. Our defence, with fewer players flooding back, was far more efficient and effective than it was previously. There was far more noticeable development in the younger players than happened under Lyon. There is a far greater enthusiasm and desire among the playing group and that's completely bloody obvious.

Considering the significant extra hurdles facing the players this season and the improvements in our methods and skills, we are so far in front of 2019 that it's crazy good. Picking one stat out of a huge number of factors that suits an argument doesn't really stack up when you compare the differences between the teams and seasons.

2020 was a far more productive year than some want to give credit. Roly is gone and good riddance. JLo is already looking a far better coach

Yeah, Yeti, but you would say that. Again, and again, and again.
But I agree with you. We look better under Longmuir. Still didn't win many games. Still didn't make the 8. But we looked better. And next season we'll be better still.

So how about we move on and stop all this, "Lyon was the devil incarnate (and he couldn't coach)" stuff, and move on? Or is it not going to stop until all the people who were part of the Lyon era are dead and buried? I'm not a good enough person or a good enough hater for that rubbish.

I only say stuff when it's true and unlike some on here (and it's the usual suspects), I don't drink the Lyon koolaid. He wasn't a good coach, couldn't get the best out of the talent at his disposal, only held his position for so long because a pair of arrogant w******s couldn't admit they were wrong in appointing him in the first place.

You can say we haven't improved a lot but then again being one of Roly's more fervent supporters, you would say that. Again and again and again. I guess we'll get past the 'devil incarnate' stage when people stop trying to talk him up on here.

S*** coach on the field, s*** bloke off it.

I wouldn't exactly call wins and losses 'one stat', as if it's just some advanced metric I plucked out of the air yeti.

I think we did ok this year, and while we had to overcome a lot, so did every other team. Freo had 7 home games, 3 away games and 7 neutral games, which put us in a much stronger position than most other teams in the league.

I think there are good signs, but we didn’t challenge anyone in the top four (we beat three top four teams last year), and we didn’t improve our wins and losses or scoring relative to the rest of the league. In our past three seasons we’ve won 8, 8, and 9 games. We were on pace to win 9 this year. I didn’t think there was a single win as good as our away wins against GWS or Collingwood last year, and I thought our loss to Geelong was one of the most miserable I’ve seen (although not as miserable as the second Derby last year….yeesh).

In-between there were definitely signs of improvement, and I think the future is bright, but it’s not like we are St Kilda coming from 14th to 6th under a new coach (despite all the encumbrances and more you outlined Yeti).

I thought it was a good, steady rebuilding year. If you think it was more than that then you have every reason to be happy. As I said, we are bound to see this season a little differently because we have a very different view of our starting point.

Sure, it's 'one stat', unless you don't actually watch the games. In that case, you wouldn't see the massive difference.

We are miles in front of where we would be had we retained Lyon.

I'm sure it hasn't escaped your notice that it's only a very, very few on here that won't acknowledge the vast improvement and guess what, all notable roly supporters.

He's gone. He's a dud. Time to let that failure go and maybe stop sniping at JLo. Just a thought.

Morgs...how can you ask for our game to be 'opened up a little more' and still cling on to the ' era of RoLy '??

The gamestyle played in 2020 was that far removed from the cloisted carp of RoLyball, and, so much more likely to actually win a game, that, there is no way that you can sensibly - nor, effectively - compare the 2.

The 'big leap' we made this year , was 'valuing the skills' of the game. Our new 2020 'skills matter' gameplan will take us so much further than the ' who-gives -a- continental-about-skills ?' Gameplan of 2019 and prior.

Yep, maybe we only won a similar percentage of games this year compared to last, but, if, with 6 odd debutants, a progressive gameplan, and, cherishing skills based play,....well,...if you can't part with the past, and get excited about our future....well...I'm really worried for you.?

You just gotta be excited about our current trajectory....!!

The biggest difference in JL's tactics, kicking slow, kicking to the boundary or kicking whereever, is that he has introduced a skill level to our kicking that was never evident once Lyon's training & game tactics had their influence on Freo as a team. Even though we still go to the boundary, it is usually 10 - 15 meters inside, giving players room to move, and players are always looking inside if possible.

Yeti's (I think) point that our defence looks better and more effective this year without the extra players back and clogging it up is a valid vindication of JL's strategy, and the most common knock on Lyons strategy. Ryan, Wilson, Hughes were all criticised in the past for their disposal skills, and tactics in the backline. This year, with room to move, we have seen Ryan take his game to AA level, Wilson show he is getting back to the player we recruited, and Hughes putting a bit of doubt into free running opposition forwards. All because they have space to operate in. (and options to kick to down the ground.)

To be fair, neither Morgan or myself are "sniping at JLo". I like him and think he's doing a good job.
