TOPIC: The Irishman makes some good points

Wishful thinking but it would be nice if we didn’t have to put up with some media goons (I can’t bring myself to call them journalists because even that is beyond them) wanting to be bigger than the game. Having to be the first to break (non) stories or sensationalising content in the hope of making a name in the media is an all too evident trend.

He's one hundred percent on the money. Watch the wagons circle now, then they'll try and twist it into putting the blame on "social media".

Push media is the problem. It's invasive and you can't tune it out.

Agree.
The culture of celebrity also feeds into this. The Sam Newman's of this world have made a fortune out of covering football with sensationalism as their MO.
Sadly its now become part of game day. Commentatiors such as Brian Taylor and Bruce McAlvaney have gone from being quirky and occassionaly humourous to annoyingly smug and caricatures of their earlier identities. It's almost like watching an cliche and catch phrase riddled 1960's English comedy.
I'll stop there before I start on Tom Brown and Sam McLure

The worst part is that the AFL embrace it by their continued employment of someone like Kane Cornes.

On one hand, they show disdain for the public who buy a ticket and do a bit of rambunctious barracking at the game, on the other they've turned player abuse into a profession for ex-players.

Well said Shane.

The intrusion of the media is getting stronger and stronger, the game day stuff is becoming more and more intrusive. The AFL harp about the mental health of players then publicly pillory 18 year olds for the slightest indiscretion.

As for Cornes I dont read anything he writes and wont listen to him he does not deserve any airtime he is just an agitator and a bully.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. They did suspend Mitch Cleary when he had the temerity to tell us who had done what. So they do care. About some things...

Spot on - it's insidious and taking any joy from the game.

Where on earth did Basil get the idea that Michael Walters was looking to leave the club??? Thank goodness for JL putting it into perspective.

I guess the feeling is if they put out 10 stories and a couple prove to be right, it justifies their existence.

Imagine the stuff he'll make up when he's Lord Mayor. And reported by his employer as fact.

I appreciate your theory Rose but I think it’s even worse than that. They don’t even care if 2 out of 10 stories turn out to be correct. As long as the story fills airtime/column inches, they are rewarded then and there. No one with any authority calls them out if the stories are inaccurate. We simply move on to the next bit of click bait while the authors of the dodgy comments pat themselves on the back as though they have just broken the Watergate scandal (youngsters will probably need to look up that reference! Actual investigatory journalism, shock, horror...)

I think that some consideration needs to be given to the role that AFL accreditation has in the entire money making scheme that used to be a sport.

If you get AFL accreditation, you get access to players, clubs, AFL House etc If you lose AFL accreditation then you'll probably get a small dribble from Centrelink once a fortnight.

So, you toe the party line and jump when the AFL says jump. Witness the comments made during games by commentators that disappear into the ether shortly afterwards. It's wishful thinking that the AFL will take action against 'reporters' (not journos) because the controversies often raised are worth column inches (2.54 cms), broadcast time and one heck of a lot of free publicity.

The players are not the main feature of the AFL, just the visible attraction. The fans, members are only important as far as how much money can be taken from them. The important people are the ones gathering, controlling and dispersing the large sums of money that is the single most important goal of the AFL. Cretins like Cornes will all have safe jobs for years because they rock the players / clubs boats but not the AFL's.

The latest nonsense being put forward by Mitch Cleary is that Connor Blakely "has to leave the Dockers". Honestly, you couldn't make this stuff up. No, wait.....
