I've seen that video quite a few times and the tackle was inevitable but to me it looked like Cripps put his shoulder into Mayne's head. Given the short time frame, that's pretty iffy but it did look that way.

As far as the ball goes, whether it was or wasn't dropped intentionally, it's still a big improvement over his usual throw, so that's something I suppose.

He lost the footy coz he was more interested in taking Mayne out, and got him high. Throw, free kicks for throw and high contact, but given Mayne played for Freo at one time, the ump probably called it " you ducked into it play on."

I proposed in a previous topic that the rule should be changed to no tackling until the player had control.
In this case clearly Cripps hasn’t got control of the footy and Mayne wouldn’t be allowed to tackle. His choice would be to bump or chase. This piece of play would probably of resulted in Cripps running and delivering lace out to a forward. Isn’t that what we want.
I can’t see a simpler way of interpreting HTB.
Does he have control?
Yes. Then you can tackle him and if he doesn’t dispose of the ball correctly it’s your free.
No. Then you can’t tackle him, if you do it’s his free.

DBTS, if Cripps was interested in controlling the footy, he would have, he had time, but he let go of the footy so he could take Mayne out, and got him high.

Well I’ve said before is there should be no free kicks paid for tackles, unless they are illegal (too high, in the back, trip). In nearly every contact sport, the benefit in general play of a good tackle is all the reward it requires.
And if the ball gets locked up, just throw it up.
In one fell swoop, two-thirds of the free kicks, three quarters of the packs and nearly all the wrong/controversial decisions in the game disappear.

Gee your a hard task master RM. he had only just received that ball at full tilt. I would hate to see that paid against one of our guys. Although Fyfe does get called occasionally while trying to burst through ruck contests before controlling the footy.
I wouldn’t allow this player to be tackled until he controlled the footy
