We're not very good at it when it comes to recycling players our way but we are very good at recycling our players to other clubs.
You could start a long list of players who we've traded away or delisted and have then been picked up by other clubs and gone on to greater success but when it comes to bringing players back, they often end up worse than they were before we got them.
McPharlin is the stand out but who else? Wilson-good value, Lobb-okay but expected better, Hogan-? Acres-? Aish-? Conca-pass, Hill, Matera, Colyer, McCarthy-no.
Other clubs seem to do it a lot better than us or maybe it's just that we know more about our players.

Unfortunately we still aren’t a destination club so most of our recycled players are coming over because they can’t get a game at their original club, with a few exceptions.

He wasn't always popular, but Danyle Pearce was very good for us in a successful era.

Longmuir said yesterday on abc that they would not be bring in players but going to the draft. Hopefully the abysmal failure of this experiment is now over. No point in bringing in players to the extent that we did ,

Hamling was a great pickup until his injury.

I think all clubs have their swings and roundabouts on this.

Hogan is probably the swing piece. Most other recent recruits required little in return. We paid Melbourne fair price for a troubled, injured star. We haven’t seen the star part yet.

Of course, forgot Hamling.

As for the swings and roundabout bit, I think it's another area unfortunately where the slimy Ooftits are better than us. Can't think of anyone that they've delisted that's gone onto great success like some of ours have and they rarely bring in players from other clubs, but when they do they play better than they were before they came. eg Kennedy, Yeo Redden. the one exception this year would be Jetta.

Of course the galling thing about Yeo was that he only really wanted to come back to us, but we said we weren't interested. he then talked WC into bringing Redden over.

The problem wasn't trading, the problem was we had no coherent plan around the list. The last few years were about key people trying to save their jobs, not long term list management.

I think the biggest problem we faced was having our 'talent spotting' based in Vic.

The club almost completely ignored untapped WA talent in favour of paying overs to lure WA players back home.

The clubs that are good in this department only recruit players to fill a specific role or position, I think we sometimes fall into the trap of bringing someone into our club just because they are available - Matera & Colyer are examples of this.

We basically got those guys for free. I don’t see exchanging fourth round picks for guys like that as evidence either way. If we were better getting 40-odd games out of Matera might have been considered a win.

One of those free players cost Matt deBoer his spot on the list, which cost Nat Fyfe his pants There's always a cost in a closed system.
